What do you think about people getting arrested for "pre-crime" manslaughter/murder as evidenced in the *Minority Report* clip?
Should people be punished for planning to commit or almost committing a deadly crime, *even if they don't follow through or technically hurt or kill anyone?* What would be an appropriate punishment for this in your opinion?
What are some **advantages** to arresting someone for pre-crime murder? What are some **disadvantages**?
**Your answer should be thorough and thoughtful (at least three detailed and meaningful sentences). Include specific examples.**

I do not think people should be punished to the same extent for planning or nearly committing a deadly crime, seeing as there are already other categories which still cover those (assault, battery, conspiracy, etc.) as well as the fact that thoughts or writings should not be punished at all. Actions taken to further a deadly crime (such as buying a firearm) should be punished, but only once actions are taken. Some advantages to arresting someone for "pre-crime" is that it prevents the main crime from happening at all, which is a very good thing, no one likes nor commits crime for crime's sake. However, I find it is outweighed by just how much surveillance is required to arrest someone for "pre-crime", even assuming that enough data permits someone to see into the future with certainty. There is the fact that reality isn't set in stone, which only further weakens the argument to arrest for "pre-crime". Arresting people for "pre-crime" also leads to a great loss of personal security and comfort, as it doesn't give people a chance to think of something else. Once they think that thought-crime, then they are considered guilty. It also gives less of a reason for a sane individual to back out of a criminal plan, seeing as they'd be considered guilty for even thinking of participating. And all of these arguments are assuming that the government is morally clear.
