I'm a little confused how this is considered a "punishment" for Canada?
no need to be confused, let me explain it to you in ways anyone could understand....
because it harms their economy, and Canadian businesses. Whereas tariffs (strategically implemented as Trump does) help USA businesses, either way.

Didn't he back out because the Trump administration slipped in a trade exclusivity clause saying Canada can ONLY trade with the US?

no, thats not the case at all.
In reality, Carney met with Democrat leaders who convinced him to scuttle the trade deal with the US ahead of the midterms. They promised a much better deal once they take control of Congress.

As per statements from PM Carney and several provincial premiers the United States was very much trying to dictate who Canada could sign trade deals with. Do you have any sources for your assertion that democrats convinced Dr carney to call off the negotiations?

I am very happy that Trump is finally standing up to them. I support him in this matter and hope he goes further.

When they say Don't I know you? say no.
When they invite you to the party remember what parties are like before answering.
Someone telling you in a loud voice they once wrote a poem.
Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate.
Then reply.
If they say We should get together say why?
It's not that you don't love them anymore.
You're trying to remember something too important to forget.
Trees. The monastery bell at twilight.

Been awhile since we did a poetry share Man in Space, by Billy Collins
Man in Space
All you have to do is listen to the way a man sometimes talks to his wife at a table of people and notice how intent he is on making his point even though her lower lip is beginning to quiver,
and you will know why the women in science fiction movies who inhabit a planet of their own are not pictured making a salad or reading a magazine when the men from earth arrive in their rocket,
why they are always standing in a semicircle with their arms folded, their bare legs set apart, their breasts protected by hard metal disks.

I found a 1960s mini mod dress for £30(!) on Vinted to wear after the ceremony. The seller said it was hers in 1968, and that "unfortunately the marriage didn't last, but I always loved the dress." Then she showed me her wedding photo with her ex cut out, and I am living for this level of petty 😆

CHARLES RAFFERTY
The Problem with Early Warnings
People don't like to leave a party unless the house is actually on fire. Even then, if the flames are far enough away to be pretty, they'll finish their drink, take one more pass at the hors d'oeuvres.
How things happen has always been unclear. Hurricanes begin in a place where no one lives.
Agents of the government start to wear masks. Fascism is a word my neighbors won't use yet. They are following
the law, they say, and the sirens are coming for someone else.

The day a poet is murdered by ice, by Hannah eve levy
The day a poet is murdered by ICE is a school day like every other in the first week of the year.
Time isn't real but still it's January, and scientists say we're gaining about sixty seconds of sunlight even as the sun sets.
I wake up and feel closer to death than the day before. 1 am a mother, so I wait for my daughter at the bottom of the stairs and I hold her hand when crossing the street and when we stop at the corner I run my fingers over her ponytail like it's my own hair.
She says there's a cloud in the sky that looks like a heart but I can't see what she sees. I am a mother so when she is hungry I feed her and when she asks me how to spell wolves I explain how some nouns transform in the plural. Man is men and tooth is teeth and person who is murdered becomes people.

Honestly I’m at a fucking loss. If you don’t understand the difference between using generative AI, and NOT using generative AI, there are simply no words in any language which are going to explain it to you.

I’ve noticed a lot of Qipao-coded influences in western fashion lately, more than usual. But often they aren’t marketed or labelled as such. That makes me curious—western folks, do you pick up these designs as have that Qipao influence? If not, how would you think of them or describe them?

She looks great, but this social double standard drives me insane. No one would bat an eyelid if she were a man. And no one is expecting my partner to wear makeup when we get hitched, but loads of people keep baiting death by telling me I’ll look “tired and sick” if I don’t learn to facepaint.

When watching Pluribus, I keep thinking of this fantastic parable by Anthony De Mello, a Hindu Jesuit priest who died in 2005.
THE NARROW PATH

God warned the people of an earthquake that would swallow all the waters of the land. The water that would take their place would make everyone crazy.

Only the prophet took God seriously. He carried huge jugs of water to his mountain cave so that he had enough till the day he died.

Sure enough, the earthquake came and the water vanished and new water filled the streams and lakes and rivers and ponds. A few months later the prophet came down to the plains to see what had happened. Everyone had indeed gone mad. They and would have nothing to do with him and were convinced that he was insane.

So the prophet went back to his mountain cave, glad for the water he had saved. But as time went by he found his loneliness unbearable. He yearned for human company, so he went down to the planes again. Again he was rejected by the people for he was so entirely different from them.

The prophet then took his decision. He threw away the water he had saved, drank the new water and joined his fellow men in their madness.

When you seek for Truth you walk alone. The path is too narrow for company. Who can bear such loneliness?

Anthony deMello. The Song of the Bird.

This is annoying me so much. I cannot believe the BBC is making me defend James Daunt, but this article title is some absolute clickbait bullshit. "As a bookseller, we sell what publishers publish, but I can say that instinctively that is something that we would recoil [from]," he said.
We would sell books by Al, says
Waterstones boss
PAWaterstones would stock books created using artificial intelligence, the company's boss has said, as long as they were clearly labelled, and if customers wanted them.
However, James Daunt, a veteran of the bookselling industry, said he personally did not expect that to happen.
"There's a huge proliferation of Al generated content and most of it are not books that we should be selling," he said.
But it would be "up to the reader"In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast, Daunt said while Waterstones uses Al for logistics they currently try to keep Al generated content out of the shops.
"As a bookseller, we sell what publishers publish, but I can say that instinctively that is something that we would recoil [from]," he said."Who's to know? [Technology firms] are spending trillions and trillions on Al and maybe it's going to produce the next War and Peace.
"And if people want to read that book, Al-generated or not, we will be selling it - as long as it doesn't pretend to [be] something that it isn't.
"We as booksellers would certainly naturally and instinctively disdain it," Daunt said.
Readers value a connection with the author
"that does require a real person" he added.
Any Al-generated book would always be clearly labelled as such.

When ladies have a girl's night in... what do they do?
I am writing a story, and I want to give my female lead a life outside of the male lead. To do this, I'm writing a girls' night in with her friend. But it just hit me l have no earthly idea what women do for fun! I'm guessing they aren't playing Madden and watching the game, like I have my male characters doing.
EDIT: Thank you so much, everyone. I've got a lot to work with now. A few people suggested
"make out" scenes, but since they're sisters I'll definitely be avoiding that. The ideas about talking about guys, sharing wine, and all the other great suggestions are perfect things I wouldn't have even thought of. Like I am short-changing some good ideas that I have already been giving, but so much good stuff.
Thanks again!
