Last week, we hosted a forum with the Sunset Dunes community and Supervisor Alan Wong. Outer Sunset Neighbors poured their hearts out, telling him how much the park means to them. We’re disappointed that he’s choosing to ignore our perspectives entirely with his attempt to close the park.

Recently, to justify his political stunt and waste SF voters’ time with a third ballot measure, Supervisor Alan Wong is willfully misrepresenting data. He’s been claiming that Sunset Dunes is causing “traffic injuries in District 4 to nearly double.” 🤦That’s patently false.

FACT CHECK
Supervisor Alan Wong is willfully misrepresenting data to justify a park closure ballot measure. He claims that Sunset Dunes is causing "traffic injuries in District 4 to nearly double."
THE REALITY
District 4 Injuries in 2022 and 2023, with the weekend-only pilot, were higher than 2024 and 2025.
SF residents now finally have a safe place to walk, bike and play in the Sunset, and the data backs this up.

It's disappointing that Supervisor Wong is choosing to misrepresent data about traffic injuries to back up a political stunt, instead of engaging in thoughtful policymaking.
We hope his colleagues honor the will of the voters and let him play out this stunt as a solo act.

🌊 Sunset dunes is winning new friends in the neighborhood, @sfstandard.com reports in their Power Play newsletter:

"Last month's recall...left some pundits assuming District 4 voters would overwhelmingly support a measure to repeal the park.
But new polling obtained by [the Standard] suggests D4 voters are split... Lurie has yet to appoint Engardio's replacement, but the poll could suggest he doesn't have to pick someone with a firm position on overturning Prop. K."

Let's face it, many of our neighbors weren't sure about Sunset Dunes last year.
But now that we're seeing the benefits (and similar levels of traffic), hearts are changing in the Sunset.

This new poll shows a 15 percentage point jump in support for the park in the Sunset - that's huge.
We've always known a coastal park is best for both the neighborhood and city. The coast belongs to all San Franciscans, but as Sunset residents, we have a special duty to be stewards for the place we call home.

🏘️Most importantly, we’re thrilled that Sunset Dunes has so quickly become a gathering spot for our neighbors, with 35% of visitors from neighborhoods adjacent to the park. San Franciscans make up 62% of visitors, and around half of the rest of those visitors are southern neighbors.

Of all visits to Sunset Dunes, 62% are San Franciscans; 35% (more than half) are from adjacent zip codes (94122, 94116, 94132, 94127) and a pretty even mix of all other zip codes including 3% from 94124 and 94134 (our neighbors in the southeast), 3% from 94112 the Excelsior and 94121 the Richmond, 2% from 94114 the Mission and Noe – refuting the argument that this was just for eastside voters; of the 38% non-SF visits, about half are our neighbors to the south – Daly City, SSF, San Bruno, Pacifica; folks from Berkeley/Oakland/Alameda next, then a smattering of all other Bay Area

In the weeks since the park opened, traffic on surrounding streets has remained relatively consistent. 📉It’s decreased over the past three weeks as drivers adjust their routes. Daily vehicle counts peaked in mid-March and have been trending downward ever since.

This is the first step towards major vegetative stabilization work on the dunes; grasses will trap the sand blowing from the beach, reducing the need for sand management and increasing erosion resilience. Fencing and signs are around the site because these beach grass transplants are very fragile.

The dunes here have been planted with native beach wild rye grass (Leymus mollis) to restore the ecosystem. These plants are important for natural dune stabilization and for wildlife, but need time to grow and are sensitive to trampling.

Following SFEI’s Growing Resilience: Recommendations for Dune Management at North Ocean Beach report, the first pilot site for propagating the native beach wild rye grass was planted near the Judah dunes last month.

You may have noticed some new fencing along the dunes, which the SF Estuary Institute recommended and the Coastal Commission required. The initial installation left beach access unclear at some points, so we worked with Rec Park to help clarify that access points remain at all intersections.
