City officials this week put the finishing touches on the design for colorful artwork coming to a pair of South of Market alleys, part of a Public Works-led streetscape improvement effort to make the downtown space more inviting and safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
Rendering of street surface paving artwork design by Barbara Stauffacher Soloman on Minna Street, between Third Street and New Montgomery Street. The design is inspired by Minnie Rae Simpson, a legendary resident of San Francisco during the rambunctious 1870s. It features angled, red-booted legs in reference to what Stauffacher Solomon called the “post-war party” culture of the late 1940s, where she spent her young adult years as a nightclub dancer at San Francisco’s Copacabana.
