Miles Franklin winners are taxed but winners on The Block aren't. How's that fair?
Last night, Queanbeyan local Omar Musa won the 2026 Miles Franklin award for the 'novel with the highest literary merit which presents Australian life.' He received a $60,000 prize, only he won’t get ...

my favourite opinion about Homer is: it’s an oral text so it is much MORE authentic to listen to the audiobook than to read the Iliad or Odyssey on the page. watching it as a film while people around you eat, drink & chat is more authentic than reading it quietly to yourself in a silent library.

It’s so interesting to see this talk about 9/11 because I was 6 years old. We had the same style uniform as the Islamic school down the road. My mother didn’t let us wear our uniform out to protect us (her Aboriginal children) and that was my first experience of how bad the world was getting.

A woman is next to him, raising her hand and holding a pencil.
Text above them: rivers of reason. Blak and Arab writers in conversation.
Text underneath: Tarntanya 2nd March 2026. Adelaide town hall, 128 king William street. 2.30 to 7.30 pm.
At the bottom are designs that represent the Aboriginal flag and a keffiyeh.

Ah yes, famously events with interstate attendees, book sales, coffee carts, wine bars, hundreds of employed artists, dozens of staffers, thousands of daily visitors to the city and, yes, ticketed events, generate "zero revenue". www.indailysa.com.au/news/just-in...
When the Premier was asked on Wednesday if he was concerned about the economic hit the state will face through the loss of Writers Week, he said “because the Adelaide Writers’ Week is a free event, it is not a ticketed event, it generates zero revenue. So no, not just at this stage.”

As a former Director of Adelaide Writers' Week I am appalled that the Adelaide Festival Board has rescinded Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah's invitation to the 2026 AWW, explicitly linking its decision to the shattering crimes in Bondi. A shocking decision that will and should have far-reaching consequences.

Loneliness is a weird feeling. I don’t think I’m going to wax poetic in a way that hasn’t been written before but I will say that it is an oddly quiet feeling, like when you’re underwater and not breathing.
