A decomp would involve taking a disassembly of a program known to have been written in a higher level language and then attempting to reconstruct either functionally equivalent or matching source from that.

It's a decomp if the program was originally written in a high level language like C. Assembly is assembled, higher languages are compiled. If it was originally written in assembly, as were most SNES games, it would be a disassembly. Making high-level code from that would be a reimplementation.

Right now two stages are the most fleshed out, those being the intro stage and the bike stage.

It'll end up being the first thing you get to when you select 'GAME', I think. The way we have the debug menu wired up is so the training option points to the test map for the selected vehicle, which here happens to be the intro stage.

A port is when you take an existing codebase meant for one system and modify it to run on another different system. (5/5)

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
A recomp, to my understanding, essentially does what an emulator does, translating the source instruction set to the target instruction set as it runs, ahead of time. I wouldn't necessarily call these 'ports'. (4/5)
110
Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
A disassembly involves translating a program from machine language to more human readable assembly language. If the program was written solely in assembly, it's a disassembly, not a decomp. (3/5)
120
Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
A decomp involves disassembling a program originally written in a higher level language (e.g. C) and translating the assembly into higher level code that is either functionally equivalent or compiles to a 1:1 match to the original program. (2/5)

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Fun fact: A decomp, disassembly, recomp, and port are 4 different things. I'm sick of seeing people confuse these terms, so I'll try to explain each of these to the best of my understanding: (1/5)

Putting two and two together, it seems reasonable to assume that this unreferenced sequence was intended for this. It fits what I'd expect to hear if the arrows did have a sound already.

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The arrows that appear at the edges of the screen call sound 8A, which points to a dummy sequence that ends immediately.

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Interesting unused Star Fox thing: The arrows that appear when flying near the edges of the screen were originally going to play a sound. The sound for this seems to be still in the sound driver, but it goes unreferenced as the pointer to it was dummied out.

Happy birthday to Monika! Where are you headed for your club field trip?
An illustration of the Doki Doki Literature Club characters on a train together. In the front, Monika holds out her phone to show something to Natsuki, with the two sharing a pair of earbuds. In the back, Sayori is excitedly looking out the window, admiring a mountainous landscape, and Yuri is absent-mindedly glancing out the window as well, lost in thought.

I wonder if it would be possible to adapt the NES Zapper to work with the SNES? Looking at nocash's specs for the pinouts and such, it seems like it could maybe be done, but I don't know an awful lot about that side of things.

I'm hoping to put out another project update soon. It's slow, but things are being done and I hope to have something significant to show for all of this soon. Thank you for your patience as we struggle through all of this.

Thanks to Livvy, we were able to back up part of the old server so we could save as much useful info from there as possible. I'm amazed by how quickly I took matters into my own hands to get everything back up and running. I don't think I've ever moved this fast.

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I would have posted another update sooner but I had to wait due to the potential risk of losing the things we were going to save. After my previous post, channels on the old server relating to our projects were archived and I began to worry that they could end up deleted.

It's been great seeing everybody talking and developing and making things again. We're all very motivated to get things done, even if we're a bit aimless right now. (3/6)

It turns out that I really didn't know a lot of these people as well as I thought I did, It was nice to catch up with everyone and just talk and have fun for once. I've come to understand what I really have.

I went into this situation thinking this was the end. I think I've proven myself wrong. As things were falling apart, I started sending friend requests and rounding up as much of the old team as possible so we could at least stay in contact.

I was trying to go for something that was a sort of middle ground between the SF1 and SF2 art styles and I think I did a pretty damn good job.

I know it's not much, but in an attempt to ease myself to some sort of normalcy, here's a little SFCD update for you. I finally finished and added in this new Arwing model I did ages ago that I'm quite proud of. I think it turned out very nicely.

Together, I think we have enough collective knowledge and experience to move on without him. We have already made such an amazing thing together, and I hope to continue on that journey with these people that I am very fortunate to be able to call my friends.

All updates on my projects from now on (besides the usual posts on socials, those aren't going anywhere) will now be on my Discord server. I have spoken with the SFNG team and we have agreed to move our business over to my server.

Sunlit @sunlitspace542.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
So far at least SFCD is moving to my server. I'm discussing matters with the rest of the old team, and I'm hoping all Next Gen stuff will be moved there too.

Next Gen is entirely separate from SFCD. It's actually the older of the two projects, Next Gen has been in development in some form since around 2021. Development was restarted a couple months ago after a couple years of getting nowhere.

SimCity SA-1 now has gesture controls. You all know me about my SA-1 work, but it's not just about accelerating games. It's about improving games to make they even more AMAZING than what they already are. Place a lot of roads, parks, wires & more with your mouse!

I got mouse working on SimCity SA-1. Now time for gestures control. I can sense the game getting as fun as SimCity 4 to build huge roads or an entire residential zone with 2-3 clicks via drag&hold =)

The first ship in Zero Racers looked really cool so I modeled it and imported it into Star Fox. It really does look like a knock-off Arwing.

Tried Zero Racers on Virtual Boy, it's really good. It's basically a combination of F-Zero, Star Fox, and the tunnel sequences from X (and possibly a bit of Virtua Racing?). Once you get used to the controls, it works really well!
