Heliotrope relives the memory of being thrown against the wall where she was found, cracking the back of her skull and explaining her head injuries. Her hand flinches towards her head with a gasp, and she turns to the two men with mounting concern. “Don’t… don’t lie. What happened to me?” Lake looks down and away for a moment but collects himself, fidgeting with his hands. “You’re right. It wasn’t an accident. It was an attack. And you were hurt. Really, really badly. So bad that… we thought there was no way to save your life. So we did the only other thing we could.” Heliotrope’s brow furrows. “What do you-” Sorrel steps forward. “C’mon now. Smart lass like you can figure it out, surely. No doubt you’ve noticed how cold y’are, even under all them covers, an’ what big teeth we have, or how queer it is to have eyes like ours. Like yours. You’re not crazy.” Heliotrope listens nervously as Sorrel taps his finger against his own chest, over his heart, in a steady rhythm. “That weird, sick feeling is your mind telling you something’s missing what should never be missing. The rhythm you forgot like a clock on the mantle has stopped, now, and it’s awful still inside.” Heliotrope’s eyes widen as Sorrel finishes, “You know what a vampire is, don’t you, child?”

Heliotrope splits into a megawatt grin, radiating orange and pink. “Are you serious!?” She springs up from under the covers - leaving Lake and Sorrel too stunned to react - then rushes past them to clamber over Lake’s armchair so that she can check the inlaid mirror above the mantlepiece. “No way! No way!” As she suspected, she has no reflection at all, waving her hand in front of the mirror, which reflects only the room behind her. “Nooo wayyy!!!”

Heliotope turns back to the others with a satisfied grin. “I knew we were real! I’ve always been very attuned to the supernatural. Like ghosts!” She pushes past the men again to bounce over the bed as she continues to ramble, “I can sense when a ghost has been active nearby.” She whispers to Lake in an aside, “Ghosts are real, right?” Lake starts to answer “Well-” but she simply goes back to bouncing on all fours over the mattress. “Wait, are witches real?” Lake: “Yes! They-” Heliotrope: “Dragons??” Sorrel: “Only in Wales.” Heliotrope: “What about fairies?” Sorrel turns away with an expression of contempt to mutter “Too fucken right they’re real,” but Heliotrope hears this, locking her sights on him. “You’ve met with the fairies!?” She gushes, dangling off the bedframe to veer into his personal space. “No,” he says, miffed, “And you’d best mind you never-” Heliotrope leaves. “Oh okay.” Sorrel turns inward with an expression that suggests he is reminding himself not to hurt a child. Heliotrope returns to bouncing on the bed as Lake watches nervously. Heliotrope: “Am I always gonna have this much energy!? I bet I could do the splits all the way to the ground! Okay. What are the rules?” Lake: “Rules?” Heliotrope: “Like are we sunlight-is-okay Twilight rules vampires or sunlight-hurts-us Vampire Diaries vampires?” Lake: “Uh- sunlight- is bad-” Heliotrope: “Got it. But we can get a witch to make us magic sunscreen or something, right?” Lake: “No… sorry… we just stay indoors…” Sorrel watches all of this happening like an upset cat.

Heliotrope, still bouncing: “Bummer. Oh well. Can we eat garlic? Wait, can we eat?” Lake: “Um… you can, but you probably shouldn’t…” Heliotrope: “Man. So just blood?” Lake: “Just blood, yeah.” Heliotrope: “That sucks. Haha! Literally! Splits!” (She does in fact hit the splits mid-air.) “Do we slurp it up through the teeth like a mosquito?” Lake cracks a smile for the first time since Heliotrope woke up. “What? Haha… No, you just kinda… go for it…” Heliotrope: “Eww! Oh yeah!” She turns around mid-jump with a huge smile. “Am I allowed to tell my parents, or is it kind of like a secret identity thing?” Lake’s smile freezes before he recoils, his expression dropping, but Sorrel appears by his side with an arm around his shoulder. Lake grimaces in anticipation before the final darkened, empty panel shows a speech bubble reading, “Heliotrope…”

The valet - an older woman with her hair in a bun - smiles at Lake on her way to the front door. “My shift’s pretty much over, was there anything else you needed?” “No. Thank you.” “Of course. Good luck with the girl, Lake.” “Thank you.” “The next valet should be here in about an hour. See you tomorrow!” “Okay. Thank you.” Dahlia meanwhile is shaking the package by her ear thinking “Not heavy enough to be a bomb… oh, who cares.” Her sweatshirt is revealed to show an airbrushed kitten. She opens the box and peers into it, saying “Ooh, now this is interesting.” Lake looks over her shoulder. “Hm? What is- Oh!” Inside the moulded box are four individual pre-filled syringes stylised in the same cyan blue that Ashley injected into the girl in the previous chapter. There is an envelope inside the box’s lid, which Dahlia opens to read from. Lake gazes in awe at the package, thinking “How can one guy be so…?” Dahlia: “There’s a note… let’s see… uhh… To the residents of- blah blah… My hope, as always, is that we can work towards a collaborative- blah blah blah… usual stuff- Ooh! Allegedly, these are-” Lake snatches the box out of her hand. “Hey! You don’t even know what-” He interrupts her, handing her one of the syringes before heading upstairs. “Yes I do. Take one.” Dahlia shouts after him, brandishing the syringe. “You’re too trusting! What if this is anti-vampire poison!?” Lake: “You know he wouldn’t do that.” Dahlia: “No I don’t! None of us do! God. At least be careful. Says here those needles are a silver alloy!” Lake pokes his head back in the door of the bedroom, his head almost higher than the doorframe, box tucked under his arm. “Any change?” Sorrel glances at him as he discards the sports pages. “Aye, she woke up for a tic, then rolled over an’ decided to snooze for another five minutes. No, y’great numpty. Wassat y’got?”

Lake turns his eye down to a syringe in his hand. "It’s what the wolf used to cure the girl. He dropped some off for us, too. Just like that. Do you know how much people would pay for this?” Sorrel regards Lake with a flat expression as he continues: “I’m going to carry one on me. Just in case. I dunno if it will work on vampires, but-” Sorrel swipes the syringe from Lake. “Me too, then.” Lake lets him, looking at him with some surprise. “You really trust him?” Sorrel observes the syringe, taking off the needle’s protective cap. “I trust your judgement. If you say his stuff works, then it works.” Lake allows himself a small, genuine smile as he reaches back down into the box, turning away, but turns back with less grace: “Oh, be careful, he said the needles are made of-” Too late, Sorrel has already given the needle an experimental touch, and his skin has stuck to the needle and peeled away, smoking. “Fucken- ouch!” Sorrel yowls. “Warn a pal sooner, won’t you?” He chastises Lake, nursing his own fingertip in his mouth with a scowl. “Fuck me, that stings…” Lake turns away again with another smile, reaching for a syringe. “Well, how else would a needle be able to jab into a werewolf? Or a vampire…” Sorrel: “Oh, you wanna get cheeky, now? Bend over an’ I’ll show your cheek exactly how a needle jabs innae fucken vampire…” An unseen speaker: “Um.”

The little girl is awake, sitting up in bed, her eyes wide and mouth flat. Depicted in colour, her skin is pale pink, her curly hair is a bright warm ginger, and her irises are the same red as the two men’s. She has a round face, big downturned eyes with prominent eyelids, feathered brows, and a more bulbous nose. Lake and Sorrel stare at her, equally shocked, as she continues, “Could you please be more mindful of your language? It’s making the space really hostile…”

Lake and Sorrel rush to the bed. Lake is nervous, unsure how to stand or where to put his hands, but Sorrel is more confident, leaning forward casually to rest his knuckles against the mattress at a comforting but still respectable distance from the girl. Lake: “Sorry- Of course- Um- so- you were- you’ve been- I mean, we’re- no, wait- This place is- shit. Um- Sorry!” Sorrel: “I’m Sorrel. The big one here is Lake. Can you tell us your name, pet?” The girl rubs her eyes as if waking up and takes a moment to gaze up at the men before replying, “Heliotrope.” Lake smiles. “Heliotrope…” He repeats. Sorrel turns to whisper to Lake with a flat look. “Well that can’t be right. Maybe she got damaged?” Lake glares at him. “Shh.” He turns his attention back to the girl, bending so that he doesn’t loom over her so much. “How do you feel, Heliotrope?” The girl looks at her hands with a confused frown. “Um… weird. I don’t know how to describe it… am I sick? Where am I?” Lake winces. “You were… caught in an accident.” Heliotrope flashes back to when she saw the werewolf emerge from an alleyway and drag her into its depths by her leg as she tried frantically to fight him off. The memories are depicted with harsh shadows in the same red as her eyes as they widen in recollection. “No I wasn’t.”

Security footage (stylised in green) labeled “Camera 1: Front” shows Ashley Lovell in front of an automated spiked gate. He is glancing around as he reaches inside his satchel for a medium-sized box. Dahlia continues, “Usually it’s just documents or a flash drive. But that’s a package, right? It’s a package. Why would it be a package? Gasp! Maybe it’s a bomb.” While she’s talking Lake stays focused on watching Ashley somewhat sheepishly using his foot to scoot the parcel further beyond the gate before he again glances around to leave. Lake turns his attention to a set of heavy double doors in front of himself. “Wait-! Dammit!” He thinks. “He’s just on the other side of those doors, but it’s broad daylight… He’s already leaving, I don’t have time to get a valet to let him in- maybe if I opened the gates…? No, that looks like a trap…” He grimaces. “What would I even say? It’s not like I have an update on the girl.” Behind him Dahlia trudges off saying “May as well bring it in… Think I saw a valet in the kitchen.” Lake’s thoughts continue, “I wish… at the very least… I could thank him.”

Lake facepalms against a stark black backdrop, lowering the monitor. “Yeah, because that went so well the last time!” He thinks. The page transitions to a sepia-toned flashback. From a higher vantage, Lake looks down to see Ashley in werewolf form chasing the Nymph from the other night. “Woah, a werewolf…” He thinks, then- “Wait, isn’t that THE werewolf? So fast… Looks like it’s just the Nymph? He’ll handle that no problem.” Struck by an idea, he smacks his fist on his palm. “Hold on! Isn’t this my chance? I’ll wait until he decommissions it, then while he’s in a good mood I’ll come out to congratulate him, introduce myself, and maybe get to thank him for all the info he’s been sneaking us!” (Genius!) In bat-swarm form, he follows Ashley, thinking “okay!”. Ashley’s jean button flies off and he crashes into the dumpster. “Okay…” Ashley dives for the Nymph and misses, whining “nooo”, and bat-Lake panics, thinking “Oh, shit, does he need help-!?”

A splatter in the top corner represents Lake defeating the Nymph (gya…) and he lands on the ground with a little smile. “Alright! I was actually useful! Now he knows he can trust me!” He thinks, starting to lower his hood while Ashley puts his earring back in. “Should I say hello or just cut straight to the- Wait… I kinda… just watched him beef it… I think his fly is undone…? And then I showed up to killsteal when he- HIS DOGS ARE OUT.” This thought is depicted in jpeg artefacted meme font superimposed over Ashley’s nasty hairy feet straight out on the alley concrete with stagnant water and broken glass and a razor blade and an old syringe as Lake stares at them dastardly. A pair of cartoon dog catchers in a van blow the whistle yelling “Somebody get these dogs off the streets!” Lake’s eyes snap back up to Ashley’s face, who is staring back like a pathetic wet dog against a backdrop of a violin in puke green. Lake whips away thinking “I didn’t see anything!! I didn’t do anything!! I’m not even here! I’ll try again next time! This one doesn’t count!!” Behind him Ashley’s ass is so plump and so sad

Lake fidgets pointedly with the broken shell from the decommissioned Nymph, squatting, pretending not to notice Ashley, haunted like a bobble headed doll. “I only came here for the Naucleus (sic), that’s right all I want is the Naucleus,” he thinks, “I wasn’t trying to upstage you, it was coincidence, you can just go I won’t look.” Ashley steps up all wide-eyed and sparkling behind him like “Um-!” and Lake’s thoughts are in bold font “Fuuuuuucckk he’s trying to talk to meeee what the fuck am I supposed to sayyy?” He is so wrapped up in his own thoughts that they block the viewer from anything Ashley is actually saying as Ashley speaks nervously with his hands. Lake: “It’s lowkey amazing how he can just bounce back like that though, how does he do it, I would blow myself up for real. No wait shit I’ve made things awkward, now he’s trying to fill in the silence because I’m not saying anything (which is probably super weird). Fuck dammit the time to say thank you has completely passed it would just come off as sarcastic- wait, did he just thank me?? For taking out the Nymph?” Lake peeks over his shoulder, still thinking- “No way dude, that was a fluke, I’ve watched you handle way worse than that before- No don’t say that (metaphorically covers mouth), then he’ll be like WDYM you’ve been watching me- but he has nothing to thank me for! It really wasn’t a big deal-” Chad meme redraw Lake saying “Not like it was hard.” in the ugliest Power Point Presentation-looking Comic Sans speech bubble you’ve ever seen in your life. Lake cringes with his whole face and imagines himself lying back to stake himself through the heart while Lake has been scalped completely bald in the background. The panels transition back to the present as Lake drags his hand down his face. “I couldn’t even say ‘You’ve already done so much for us’ without being interrupted… I mean, I’m glad we were interrupted, but…” Behind him the valet hands Dahlia the package. “Here it is.” “Thank you.”

one piece fan comic; the first panel is sanji in the bathroom, gripping the sink and staring into the mirror. he is saying, "alright sanji...you can do this. it's time to live your life...and flirt...with a MAN!".
panel 2: sanji is staring at you now and gripping the sink still, face manic. he is shouting, "you are in the prime of your life! you can do anything!" somebody outside shouts, "sanji! hurry up in there we only have the one bathroom!"
in the last panel, sanji is suddenly outside standing next to a chill zoro. sanji is not chill, and is sweating nervously and blushing and smiling weirdly. he thinks to himself, "heheheheheh, this is it..."
zoro says, "yo cook. what's up?" to which sanji replies, "oh, nothing much..."

panel 1: sanji continues nervously, but he is determined, "just, uh, looking for something to, uh, heh... 'occupy my time'..."
panel 2: sanji gives a big darling wink and smile. you can tell he's doing it because it says wink! above his head in curly writing and we can omnisciently see his closed eye through his emo bang.
panel 3: however, zoro cannot see this, and he thinks, "why's he staring like that?" he scratches his face and looks to the side as he says, "uh, why don't you do like a puzzle or something?" off screen, sanji replies, "i uh, had something else in mind..."
panel 4: zoro turns and walks away, saying "well IDK then good luck with that." sanji, devastated that he failed, looks on with a strained smile and bloodshot eyes as his cigarette falls out of his mouth.

This unfortunately went over Zoro's head for months

Digging back up my old #OnePiece AU art where the Straw Hats didn't meet until after (what would've been) the timeskip, so Zoro's a marine lieutenant commander (with zero marine loyalty) and Zeff & the Cook Pirates went back to the Grand Line, where Sanji grew up a pirate and flagrantly bisexual
