Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 04/10/20263rd generation Small Coppers keep on going until the frosts finish them off. I narrowly missed a wonderful photo opportunity when one landed on a lady sitting in front of me in a crowded football stadium, at Sheffield Utd vs Norwich City, 4 weeks ago! Flew away just before I was ready📷☹️ 👀 000
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026How lovely! That i.d might well be correct. It is an ichneumoid wasp in the genus Pimpla, but I don’t think we can tell from the photo if it is indeed the Black Slip Wasp (Pimpla rufipes) or one of its very similar sister species. They parasitise caterpillars and pupae of butterflies & moths. 🐛🔜⚰️ 010

Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Visited the Somerset Levels last week. With a bit of help from the locals + some timely sunshine, we found Large Marsh Grasshoppers. 0327

Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 14/09/2026@rdimond.bsky.social is correct. It’s a male Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria. And, as Rory suggests, it was probably purchased as food for a pet (most likely a reptile). 030
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Completed our annual mark-release-recapture population estimate for Large Marsh Grasshoppers at the Hop of Hope Project’s best established Norfolk site today. In this v dry summer, the core area pop’n fell from 410 adults in 2025 to 165 this year, a 65% decrease. Site wet again now, 🤞for 2027! 0112
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Almost certainly C. brunneus, but biguttulus + mollis both common along the Dutch coast in the vicinity of Europort +the ferry to Hull. Females virtually impossible to tell apart. Males’ forewing (tegmina) venation can be diagnostic, calling song stridulation highly distinctive in each species.hull.in 110
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 26/08/2026A great find. Curse the 🕷️🕷️🕷️and their silky skills!🕸️ 100
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Large Marsh Grasshoppers on a Cambridgeshire fen and a Norfolk bog today. Plus their sworn enemy! Before the “Hop of Hope” project, led by Citizen Zoo, LMG were last seen in East Anglia in 1968. So nice to have them back! @norfolknats.bsky.social @naturalengland.bsky.social @wildlifetrustbcn.org 1192

Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 20/08/2026It’s cousin E. integriceps (Sunn Pest) inflicts massive damage on cereal crops (esp wheat and barley) in parts of N.Africa, Eastern Europe, and Western & Central Asia. I did research on them 25 yrs ago (pheromones, vibrational signals) - fascinating insects. 010
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 18/08/2026That’s a lovely pic. But you really didn’t have to take off your yellow & green scarf, Andrew! 010
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/2026Common Green Grasshopper is a broadcaster - sits stridulating away, waiting for a female to approach or to reply to his prolonged calling. Field Grasshopper, by contrast, has more of a call and search strategy, with acoustic interference by rival males. Life in the undergrowth - always interesting! 110
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/20262 male Field Grasshoppers (Chorthippus brunneus) searching for females, and a brief chirp alternation (“rivalry song”). 100
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/2026Common Green Grasshopper (Omocestus viridulus) - male stridulation. Not as common as it used to be in many parts of southern England. 110
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/2026This is the “rivalry song” of the Field Grasshopper (Chorthippus brunneus). It’s a contest - 2 males are calling in alternation, but we cannot see 1 of them. There may also be a concealed female there somewhere. 🤔 120
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/2026“Those ‘Airey Sheildbugs ‘re up ta summet! …” 😆 They do seem to like rhubard. 000
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 17/08/2026A busy Sunday for the Hop of Hope Project, releasing home-reared Large Marsh Grasshoppers in the Norfolk Broads + Cambs Fens. Kudos to our volunteers, who have worked hard for 10 rainless weeks to find fresh grass daily for their ‘hoppers. + A sighting of Juniper in the Fens! @citizenzoo.bsky.social 0184
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026I don’t know - I suspect he will sense the UV and stop calling, but do give it a try, and report back! Some African grasshoppers I am familiar with have flourescent markings which I suspect reflect UV. Scorpions really glow in UV. 010
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026If you have a red light you might be able to observe the singer without disturbing him. 🤨 110
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026My speculative i.d. could be wrong … another candidatecwould be the Much commoner Long-winged Conehead (the pic shows a female) but the pulse repetition rate seems too slow. 110
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026This is a male bush-cricket - sounds like a Bog Bush-cricket. Do you live near heathland? 210
Dr Stuart Green @stuvigreen.bsky.social · 13/08/2026Looks like you all had a great time! I was looking out for you, but couldn’t spot you anywhere. Doesn’t really matter - it was great! Sadly the “cacophony” 😮 has driven Queca away to read a book in the bedroom! 110
