Yeah, it's like the dress code in an employee handbook... everything specifically listed as "unallowed" seems like it completely goes without saying, but it's called out in writing because someone wore it to work. Weirdly specific rule changes can always be traced back to an individual.

Moved to Vermont, lifting weights, having to become a better cook because our vegetable garden is so fecund and we gotta find new ways to eat tomatoes and squash!

Hi, I'm Mary, and I think Enrique Iglesias' "Súbeme la radio" has the best harmonizing by male voices since Mozart.

People who intentionally have more than 3 kids are people I always refer to as having a million kids. At 4+, numbers are meaningless, you've spent the entirety of your 30s pregnant, and all I can do is marvel.

Yeah, the language lists in EMRs have been like this for almost a decade. Lazy coding, not AI.

I work in healthcare and for a brief glorious moment we had a Dr. Frankenstein *and* a Dr. Kevorkian. The joke was that you wanted to see them in the correct order.

...because they were absolutely riveted (of course), and eavesdropping on their conversations at intermission was completely delightful. "Oh my god, dude, this is *filthy*, it's AMAZING"

I'm honestly a little jealous! Can you imagine experiencing that twist in real time? I once saw a production of Dangerous Liaisons with a bunch of teenagers on a school outing sitting in front of me, all acting bored beforehand. I like to think their teacher deliberately hid the plot from them...

Today I was able to take not just my own kids (who've been attending for a while), but my tween's two friends, one of whom came out this year. As we got in the car afterwards, I heard from the backseat: "that was the greatest thing ever." ❤️

The one time I visited Florida I packed for, you know, the 85-90° it was predicted to be during the visit. On the first day I had to go out and buy sweaters, socks, etc, because I didn't realize every indoor space would be 60°.

And he handled these explanations by having his "brilliant literary scholar" heroine know NOTHING about these books & have to ask men to explain literary references to her. In the first few pages she has to ask a man where "the time is out of joint" quote comes from. Sorry to vent! But dang.

I remember feeling actively insulted by it. The author set up a premise explicitly for lit nerds, but also believed that the reader needed everything explained to them, including the plots of Jane Eyre & Hamlet...

Oooh, was that the Tuesday Next series? That moment was BONKERS. And in order to set it up, the author had to have his "world's most brilliant Shakespeare scholar" heroine never have heard of any of the alternative-author theories!!

I think this was the one that I put down after the heroine muses that she's not like other girls because no other girl in the world has ever loved to read.

My neighbor got one right before the 2024 election (yeah, he was definitely making a point), and one (1) extremely mild New England winter later, that thing looked beat to SHIT. Midway through its second winter (even milder) a panel fell off. It's been fun.

My theory is that many progressive white people are so desperate for *white* "working-class" allies that any burly bearded guy who says some of the right things gets idolized. I'm surprised that we're doing this AGAIN after Fetterman, but not at the behavior in general.

I was at a science museum one May 4th, where it was apparently a cosplay day... we saw one small girl dressed as Rey, and at least 25 grown men dressed like Imperial officers, meaning they were dressed like Nazis. It was incredibly upsetting.

This is from a family plot in my local cemetery.
Grave marker of 3 children who died between 1880-1885: one died aged 9 days, one the day of their birth, and one aged 3 years. They are all from the same family.

Yes, this is exactly what we do! It works fine, the kids only implement it once every couple of weeks, and no one goes hungry.
010 1
MMP @studiedtorments.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
Our rule is if the kids genuinely try something - an actual bite - and then politely request an alternative they can make themselves (PBJ or toast, usually), along with a vegetable, it's fine. It's not worth my time or any of our emotional energy to be stricter than that.

It's an eligibility term in human services, and the whole point of it is that it DOESN'T just refer to inmates! It refers to anyone who has had to deal with charges against them, because that is disruptive as hell even if you don't go to prison. It's jargon, but it's not just to be PC!
150 5
MMP @studiedtorments.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
It's a recent grant / funding term used to expand the eligibility criteria for support services. Services previously only available to people just out of prison lately became available to people involved with the justice system at many other stages. So yeah, it's jargon, but it's a real thing!

Sometimes, yeah... but a lot of the time the director just wants a nighttime shot of the Zakim Bridge, and so in tons of movies you end up with characters' cars on that bridge no matter where they started or where they're going!

Oh, for sure! I didn't mean to imply that Markey is perfect. Just saying that Moulton got a lot of people mad enough that an attempt to run on "I'm younger than he is" isn't going to be sufficient.

He (Moulton) is trying. But his throwing trans kids under the bus a while back was a huge misstep in his district; we'd rather have an old guy who supports trans rights.

I wanted my second wedding to be a full-on "go to City Hall" elopement, but it was his first, so we compromised... set up a tent in the yard, invited 15 people, put bow ties on the dogs, and got married. It was great.

Forrest Gump. My brother and I sat through the whole thing whispering to each other every 10 minutes, "this is so bad, but everyone is raving about it, so it must get good, right? So we shouldn't leave, right?" and 3 hours later we were so mad. These days we'd be out of there so fast, lol
