Paying taxes is punishment is it? Some might say it's a contribution to the infrastructure and regulations (like the rule of law) that enables you to build a successful business and, being less transactional, your contribution to society..

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

This is correct. Sure, make the ‘things’ - but make them out of the standard parts. They won’t be perfect - but that’s kinda the point.

In a series of private meetings, the company consulted religious scholars to help instill morality into its A.I. models — and make the case that Claude could be conscious.

An inconvenient truth for the racists and xenophobes. Low birth rate in the UK inevitably means fewer young supporting ever more older people. Immigration brings in young people and eases the problem. Without it, everyone must work longer.

To assert that any contemporary AI can think or is conscious represents a particularly emaciated meaning of those words, and suggests that any author of such assertions has a profound misunderstanding of the exquisite nature of what it means to be human.

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Agree. But he absolutely does need to get on top of it. There undoubtedly will be high level governmental approaches on this - and it is a risk he needs to mitigate. Just NOT by trying to change it.

The single biggest drivers in UK energy prices has been Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Trump attacking Iran. The idea the UK (or Eu) could ever compete with the US both in raw materials and manufacturing capacity is unfeasible. At most there's ~some~ feasible arguments here if he wasn't so idiotic

I don’t see any viable path for AI to destroy humanity in the next 10 years. I do, however, see a path for people to use AI in dumb ways without sufficient oversight leading to humanity destroying humanity in the next 10 years.
