Once you’ve realized that a flat head screwdriver CAN open a can of paint, you’re more likely to start using it to pry trim off the wall or scrape glue out of the corner of a cabinet, even if you never intended to use that tool in any of those ways when you first bought it.

Bigotry is a way of thinking about the world, like a tool in the mental toolbox, and there isn’t really a way to compartmentalize different subjects and make certain tools off limits in the same way that, once you’ve bought a tool for one job there’s nothing keeping you from using it on the next.

I think I’d probably prefer a proportional representative system if I had a magic wand but I also wonder whether there’s any meaningful way to get there without a constitutional amendment and that’s just not on the menu right now

I think there are arguments to be made that a parliamentary system where the coalition is created after the election rather than before would lead to a more representative government but I question whether it would be any better than just bans on partisan gerrymandering and automatic registration

Don’t get me wrong, a lot of blame to pass around, but Republican voters pulled the lever for Trump and his enablers because they liked his bigotry and the promise of saying slurs at work and owning the libs. Some of them may have regrets now but Trump was an extremely known quantity in 2024

I think this is all true to a degree but also a lot of people heard “mass deportations” and didn’t think “yeah that sounds great”. The media likes Trump and wants him to win and Dem pols did a poor job making the case against him and also Republican voters are mostly shitty racist people
