HENSELFEST KEYNOTE SPEAKER ALERT the singular @mwilsonkimber.bsky.social will give the keynote address at the inaugural Henselfest
Speaker Announcement
Marian Wilson Kimber
Keynote Speaker
Henselfest 2027
April 1-3, Berkeley, California
henselfest.orgMarian Wilson Kimber
Marian Wilson Kimber, Professor of Musicology at the University of lowa, has been writing about Fanny Hensel and the issues surrounding women composers for over three decades. Her 2002 article, "The Suppression of Fanny Mendelssohn: Rethinking Feminist Biography," continues to be widely read. Wilson Kimber's scholarship has treated Das Jahr, Hensel as a travel writer, and her position in the writings of the American suffrage movement. Her article about nineteenth-century band arrangements of Hensel's Gartenlieder led to performances of them by the Prince Regent's Brass in England. Wilson Kimber has spoken about Hensel and her music in Germany and Korea, and been quoted in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal on women composers' careers.
Wilson Kimber's research into women's roles in American musical life appears in two books, The Elocutionists: Women, Music, and the Spoken Word (2017) and Clubwomen Activists and the Making of American Music, forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press. She currently serves as the editor of the Journal of the Society for American Music and contributes to the blog, Women's Song Forum.

There are much smarter people on here talking about the economics and labor dynamics of orchestras, and I will only add: we must subsidize orchestras more (as part of a new, holistic, and robust approach to art making in America) Many other industries are only sustainable thanks to subsidies

I def don't have all the answers as to why there is such a persistent crisis/lull cycle in US orchestras, but one thing I do know from my 25 years at the high end of that business is that WAY too many execs and board leaders are convinced there is a magic sustainability formula hiding somewhere.

There‘s much to appreciate in Mamdani, but his insistence that culture isn’t a privilege of the rich is one of his strengths. It is reminiscent of how unions and the government treated it in the 1930s -art for the masses - paintings, music, opera, theater - democracy for all.
