And that’s a union folks! Today, SRWG members voted in an NLRB election to formalize our union! Thank YOU to every single person who has shown support whether it be through kind words, signing our petition or continuing to uplift our work. We look forward to what’s next and we’ll keep you updated!

Are you a Street Roots donor concerned about the board’s refusal to voluntarily recognize our union? We have heard from folks that they are concerned about supporting Street Roots while our board has not recognized our union. 1/

Would you consider advocating for the workers unionizing at the nonprofit you sat on the board of for years? The CWA endorsement on your website sends a message of solidarity, and we’d love to hear from you!

You should probably really rethink what you're doing if you're on the board of Street Roots and refuse to recognize the workers union.

Street Roots' board of directors notified the NLRB that it will not voluntarily recognize the Street Roots Workers Guild on Dec. 9, and violated federal labor law by failing to post notice of our election by the end of the day yesterday. 1/

Text reads: "Street Roots' board of directors notified the NLRB that it will not voluntarily recognize the Street Roots Workers Guild on Dec. 9, and violated federal labor law by failing to post notice of our election by the end of the day yesterday."

Text reads: "The Guild — which represents the 15 union-eligible workers who unanimously authorized the union — is disappointed by this news and particularly disappointed by the reason the board gave for refusing to voluntarily recognize: they want to exclude 2 of our colleagues. As an organization that touts its efforts of social justice and equity, we see this as a failure of the board to carry out its mission."

Text reads: "The NLRB defines "supervisors" as having the power to hire, fire, discipline, promote, or assign tasks to workers. These 2 employees do not hold those powers. The Street Roots Workers Guild membership remains steadfast in its calls for the board to recogniez the Guild and all its members immediately. Please show your support by signing the petition at the link in our bio (below), and sharing this widely!"

if i were on the board for an organization claiming values like "dignity" and "equity" and which is dependent on the goodwill of the community, i would simply voluntarily recognize our employees' union without having to be asked twice

Street Roots' board did not meet our 5 pm deadline for voluntary recognition, but we are ready to work with them any time they are ready. CWA 7901 sent our petition documents to the NLRB today, but we will rescind it if the board recognizes our union voluntarily. Thank you for your support!

Statement from Street Roots Workers Guild:

On a red background, white text reads, "This morning, Street Roots’ board chair Nick Bjork responded to our letter requesting voluntary recognition. Despite our unanimous support to unionize and the organization’s stated values, the board requested an additional week to consider our request. We are disappointed by this delay and will file a petition to the NLRB today. We look forward to our upcoming certification vote — unless the board upholds its stated values and voluntarily recognizes our union."

No matter how progressive you think your organization is, you can never underestimate how ingrained anti-unionism is in the managerial class. @streetroots.bsky.social MAY need time to figure out how to finance a union work force. But delaying recognition isn't how you say that.
