It doesn't get much more Scottish than this wee beauty hard at work on a thistle. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐝 check my prints here: weescotland.com #bumblebee #thistle #scotland #nature #macro #wildlife #photography #floral #beekeeping #bee
A crisp, close-up macro photograph captures a fuzzy bumblebee perched atop a vibrant purple wild thistle in bloom. The bee, with its distinct black and golden-yellow striped torso, is deeply nestled into the fine, dense purple petals of the flower. Below the colorful bloom, the thistle's bulbous, spherical base is covered in a sharp defensive armor of spiky green and pale yellow thorns. A second, unopened thistle bud sits lower and slightly out of focus to the right. The background is a soft, beautifully blurred mix of deep green foliage and a moody, overcast sky, making the bright purple of the national flower of Scotland and its busy visitor stand out vividly.

Fatima Ronquillo (born 1976) is a highly acclaimed, self-taught Filipino-American painter known for her distinctive "imaginary portraiture". Her work seamlessly fuses European Old Master techniques with Latin American magical realism and folk art traditions, creating a captivating world populated by fictional characters drawn from her own imagination, literature, opera, and theater.

Background and CareerBorn in Pampanga (San Fernando), Philippines, Ronquillo emigrated to the United States with her family in 1987 at the age of 11. Her childhood was heavily influenced by Catholic iconography in the Philippines and classical literature like Shakespeare after settling in San Antonio, Texas. She began exhibiting her artwork publicly at just 15 years old. Over the decades, she has garnered a massive international following, with her paintings entering prestigious private collections across North America and Europe.

Currently lives and maintains a studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the region's blend of Spanish colonial history and native cultures continues to subtly inform her imagery.

I went to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art again. I had my children with me so I couldn't look at anything for too long, but this painting captivated me from a distance. I remember thinking "She looks like a dead woman" and then my friend came to me and told me it was Persephone.
Thomas Hart Benson's Persephone. He was an American artist. And all the little details in this painting have me gazing at it for hours. Is she just waking from a nap after a swim? Or is she a corpse that was beautifully posed? She seems rather too stiff, her hip bone looks almost unnatural as she lays there. Her expression does not read to me like one who was pleasantly sleeping. Her colors feel flat as opposed to the vibrant hues of the Farmer next to her. Speaking of the farmer, or rather Hades, the info card says he has a "lustful" expression. However viewed through the lense that he stumbled upon a dead woman, the expression then turns from lust, to concern.
The muted colors of the flora around her, as well as the scene of harvest behind her, indicates to me that this is the end of summer. Harvest time. Yet the flowers in her basket are still freshly cut. This painting speaks to me of seasonal change, and the woman, with her red blanket pooling under her like blood neither belongs to the living nor dead. Or perhaps she belongs to both?A close up of the details of her basket full of flowers and shoes. Notice the way the red fabric flows into the basket almost like a liquid."Thomas Hart Benton
American 1889-1975

Persephone 1938-1939
Tempera with oil glazes on canvas, mounted on panel.

Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone recasts a Greek Myth in a contemporary rural guise. Beautiful Persephone was abducted by Hades who imprisoned her in the underworld. Her father Zeus negotiated her release for all but four months every year. During this period her mother, the harvest goddess Demeter, denied the growth of all flora, thus creating winter.

Benton's Persephone appears as a sunbathing farm girl. Hades is shown as a lustful, aging farmer with a rickety cart for his chariot. His facial features seem similar to Benton's own, although he used a local model. The creek-side suggests an Arcadian landscape as well as a likely venue for skinny-dipping. Shamelessly naked, Persephone evokes Old Master female nudes in addition to modern pin-ups"

Can you see how I feel the info card takes away from the heaviness and meaning of this painting? But. Then again I'm not an Art Historian. Just someone utterly devoted to Persephone.

It’s important to note the use of #polychromy on a bronze statue. We have ancient written works that refer to this practice; and although the lips would have been inlaid with copper to produce a natural red color, other parts could be painted. Or the bronze treated in different ways. 🏺
