and her mother abandoned her yet again to dote on Mextli like he's the golden boy. She believes that once she achieves goddesshood, no one will ever be able to harm her ever again, physically or emotionally because she will be all powerful and untouchable. She's, unfortunately, wrong about that.

as a child, but was rejected by Xipe Totec because she wasn't "pure", thanks to your uncle. He exploited her for a decade in exchange for teaching her dark sorcery, before she killed him to secure her deal with Smoking Mirror. Then her brother Mextli chopped her up (never mind she kinda earned it)

#AwesomeCharacters The underlying reason Coyolxauhqui has enslaved herself to Smoking Mirror is the promise that he will turn her into a goddess. Why does she want to be a goddess? Because her entire mortal life has been one familial betrayal after another; her mother sold her for a sacrifice

#LitHodgepodge Mextli, of course, is a hero, but he's also got the Shadow going on: his hunger for violence argues with him constantly and sometimes even seizes control of his body to do what it wants. It's a constant struggle between his desire to be a good person and the underlying appetite

Periodically I remember that I like drawing with white (digital) pencil on a black background. Also, raccoons are cute.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

to prove it's my original work when I go to copyright the finished product. Especially when it looks suspiciously like the copyright office itself is using AI to vet submissions, which is all kinds of fucked up if that's what's happening. I've met so many great writers doing WipSnips, so this is

After much thought after reading of a writer friend's ordeal with the copyright office, I've decided to no longer post WipSnips. Maybe it's just paranoia, but this business is hard enough without worrying that my unpublished prose might be scraped for LLM training and make it difficult for me

That's what it sounds like, for sure. I think others are right that they're using an AI detector to vet submissions, and that is so fucked up. I'm so pissed right now.

Nightmare fuel for those us actually writing our books ourselves. Is this going to be the new normal when we go to register copyright on our works? Fuck everyone who uses LLM in any form.

I like using Word for writing, but they've made annoying changes which make no sense. Like, I paste a Spanish term or phrase, like Guerra de Reforma, and it suddenly decides to change my spell-check to Spanish despite 99% of the manuscript being English. Then I have to look up how to change it back.

As someone who writes characters with really difficult names and not entirely sure that I even pronounce them "correctly"...I shy away from providing pronunciation guides. However people want to pronounce them in their heads is fine by me. And maybe they'll go online and find some pronunciation

I took a few weeks off from SM too, to take a vacation and recover from the cold I picked up while there. I did try to keep up on some writing though while I was recovering, if only because I fear falling into that 10yr hiatus again if I stay away for more than a few days.
