This is regrettable. Spahn made a personal decision to have a child via surrogacy while defending the ban in Germany politically. Nobody can and should be expected to support all policies of their party, least of all on highly personal decisions. Moral absolutism will destroy our societies. 1/2

It is not a easy ban to enforce, many of the crucial details still need to be figured out - but all in all, this seems like a positive step. Social media has its benefits but the balance sheet is decidedly negative for society. The less we rely on it, the better. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The measures will see apps including TikTok and Snapchat blocked for UK teens early in 2027.

"Speech" is an action. It is an action like riding a bicycle, selling fish, or baking bread. If someone invoked "freedom of action" as a reason for not regulating a harmful activity, we'd see straight through it. Speech can be just as harmful as any other activity. /1

This is bordering on outsourcing your thinking to a chat bot. You learn stuff by researching and reading the source material yourself and thinking about it - not by letting someone else summarise (allegedly) salient sources. The fact that it is a probabilistic text predictor doesn't make it better.

Also the people reclaiming Dworkin today are — ironically enough — Vermeule and co. Which shows that as an interpretive strategy, it’s pretty weak and easily contorted into something Dworking would have hated. Too bad for him.

Exactly. Remove the underlining (and underdeveloped) liberalism, and Dworkin's legal interpretation is indistinguishable from common good constitutionalism. Vermeule deploys it towards deeply illiberal and undemocratic ends in service of a Catholic theorcracy without issue.

Completely unoriginal thought but: it's frustrating that the actual experience of living in large cosmopolitan multicultural city (London Uk in my case) is actually pretty dope, but a lot of politics is organised around this being a nightmare scenario that must be apologised for and avoided.

I've just sent the following email to the editors of The Journal of Comparative Law:
Dear editors of JCL,

hope this finds you well.

My name is Paolo Sandro, I'm an associate professor of law at the University of Leeds.

I'm writing to you to express my utmost dismay at your decision to publish Pierre Legrand's disturbing 200 pages attack against the authors of OUP's a very short introduction to comparative law.

I'll limit myself to one point (one of too many, unfortunately): attacking people on the basis of their nationality, as Legrand's does over and over again in the text, is a textbook case of racism.

This would be already clearly unacceptable in everyday discourse, but it is hard to fathom how you thought this could be even remotely ok in what is supposed to be a scholarly critique among colleagues.

To make things worse (if possible) Legrand belittles, in almost every conceivable way, these two colleagues for, among other things, not citing him (or not citing him enough) in their book. It's disgusting.

For what's worth, I think you have severely failed in your duties as journal editors, and you owe - besides the prompt retraction of the piece - the most profound apology to the two colleagues targeted.

Kind regards,

Paolo Sandro

Feel like I'm going mad. The Budget's 'headroom' is based on frankly irresponsible and wildly optimistic claims about what Labour will do in the final year of the forecast, and on ignoring a bunch of upward pressures on spending, and the claim is that she was being exaggeratedly *pessimistic*?

When it comes to modern war, Ireland is a high-value target: its waters on the western fringe of Europe contain three-quarters of all undersea cables in the northern hemisphere. Despite this, is unprotected and unprepared. An #FTEdit 🧵 on why this determinedly neutral nation is Europe's weak link 👇
