If a product has millions of customers their support team should number in the thousands, but it rarely does. And even if the company has hundreds of support staff they will be poorly trained and working from a script. No match for the solo-dev who wrote the actual software.

Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Small software devs have the highest level of customer support because they usually have fewer customers. Think about the ratio of support devs to number of customers. One solo-dev can support a few thousand customers.

When I see "Sorry for the delay, we are experiencing a high level of demand" I read "We underfunded customer support department because we don't care about customers"

Big companies chasing the money don't case about existing customers and making their lives better. They only care about growth.

I don't want AI, I never wanted AI, I want decent customer support!

There's a service I've been using for many years. Support used to be great when they were small. Now they are big it's terrible. I issued a complaint and received no response. Today I get an email telling me they bought out an AI company so they can push new AI products.

10x Editor exists because it can survive small and grow slowly. I suspect this is true of any product that focuses on quality.

Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Because my main motivation isn't money, and because I'm 100% self funded I can focus on quality. Support small software devs.

Tired of companies chasing the money rather than focusing on quality. Always pivoting to the next big thing in the hope of striking it big. I understand, it's hard to sell quality, much easier to jump on the hype train.

For anyone saying 250ms start-up time is too slow, I agree. But take it up with Microsoft, it's the time it takes to start DirectX and create a window. 10x could start in around 60ms.

New users might find this useful. You can now import key bindings from Visual Studio

The new build contains a number of improvements of AI agent integration. Most notably, the replace_text tool. This is a more robust way of agents writing to files, so be sure to tell your agent about it.

I decided 10x wasn't fast enough, so I've been optimising again: - Open workspace time reduced by 20% - Start-up time: reduced by 30% 10x now starts in around 250ms

New 10x build release (1.0.514) So many changes they wouldn't fit onto one page

Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
I just uploaded build (1.0.500) That's 500 builds and 2,327 changes since 10x was launched 3 years ago. I've been working on 10x almost 10 years. The reason I keep going, because the 10x community is the best! Come and join us.

Because of this it's our job to fight complexity where ever we can. There will always be complex problems where we do need to flex our brains, but everywhere else we need to strive for simplicity. Complexity is the enemy of good software.
140
Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
But programming has a particular problem because programmers usually self select for enjoying complexity. We enjoy being able to understand something complex and get it working. We are engineers of probably the most complex structures humans have ever created.
110
Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Unnecessary complexity affects most human activities. Just look at politics and the legal system. We try and solve every problem by adding something new which just adds another set of problems.
110
Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
Everything that's wrong with modern software can be summed up in two words: "Unnecessary Complexity" Programming languages, project structure, build systems. libraries, performance, team structure, all suffer from this.

In a recent poll of 10x users more than half didn't want any AI
021
Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
10x wasn't written with AI, doesn't contain any AI and doesn't upload your code anywhere. If you choose to use AI agents that's fine, it will work with 10x. But 10x itself is free of AI.
030
Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
Just to be clear, 10x doesn't contain any AI. The recent update adds an MCP server that allows any agents you're running to communicate with and control 10x. The new Terminal feature allows you to open terminals in 10x, which allows you to run CLI AI agents within 10x.

Stewart Lynch @stewartlynch8.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
It turns out that AI agents want to use 10x too. They need fast code navigation as much as we do. Stop waiting for AI to grep files and give it access to 10x.

The vim.py script that 10x uses is maintained by the community. We've decided to let AI write and maintain its own script to see if it does better. The AI script is here: github.com/Phildo/10x/b... If you're a 10x vim user give it a try and leave some feedback.

Most products get slower as they age. When you have a large team of programmers working on new features and adding complexity this is almost inevitable. 10x is getting faster as it ages. Whatever I'm working on, every time I notice something slow, I stop what I'm doing and fix it.
