I think there is a financial literacy issue. Some people may hold back on spending because they don’t understand how much they have or how long it will last. From a risk management perspective, having more set aside makes sense too. I don’t agree at all with the author’s reasoning for annuities.

I think we will shift back to some immigration increase annually which will keep the population growing slowly. Maybe this won't happen until after Trump term ends, but seems inevitable.

They are evidently not big college football fans. Alice Walton funded the Crystal Bridges museum, an extraordinary art museum in Bentonville. And John Tyson brought Calipari to Arkansas. But no big donors have stepped up on football.

Dolly shows that ambition, intelligence and love of craft are not in conflict with humanity, generosity and love of community, let alone joy and fun…if only the modern cohort of business leaders felt the same…💔

The Fed board also interviews Fed presidents and can suggest to bank boards candidates such as for the Atlanta Fed president’s opening. A chairman who flexes his muscles can very much influence the Fed bank presidents.

Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
The Fed sets communication guidelines. He would need to get the board and/or FOMC to approve any formal changes —though a chair can make his views known … Fed presidents are reviewed and can be called on the carpet if they say something the chairman thinks is inappropriate.

I bet Warsh might put some limits on how much Fed presidents talk and exactly what they can say — it’s just a matter of how restrictive he wants to be and how much pushback he gets. I think Warsh would prefer less news from Fed officials speaking out.
111
Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
What if the Warsh communications task force recommends that, in line with the chairman’s preferences, Fed presidents and governors stop talking about their view of future monetary policy? Would something like this fly? Seems like Warsh would likely prefer less Fedspeak.

Really dumb. Nick is a great reporter and everyone at the Fed and who follows the Fed is very much aware of that.

In 5 years when FOMC transcripts are released, the most fascinating question will be how Powell outlined his views on the economy and on monetary policy, and how deferential the commmitte was to him and he to Warsh.

Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
If Warsh is going to stick to his not-explaining-policy strategy, his communications committee is going to have to rein in speeches and interviews by Fed governors and presidents almost entirely. It’s really hard to see that happening after decades of transparency.

Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I wondered to what extent Trump watches the Fed press conferences or hears about them from political loyalists. Some of Warsh’s implied ripping of the Powell Fed came across as aimed at Trump. That’s not a way to win friends with the rest of the FOMC, though.

There was a strongly implied criticism of Powell -- the idea was that the new team is on the ball and can get things done, not like the lazy guys who screwed up before I came in eight weeks ago.. I wonder how that went over with the FOMC and the staff.

It’s a ludicrous justification. There are bank failures under basically every Fed regulatory group—and SVB, while bad, pales in comparison to some past failures like during the Great Financial Crisis.

NYC’s small business owners have said it over and over: endless paperwork and uncertainty has made getting their stores up and running too difficult. So we’re cutting red tape, eliminating redundant permits (did you know you need a permit just to serve some ice cream?), and speeding up inspections.

There are TWO sets of measures. The first: a massive apparatus collecting vast quantities of data about hundreds of concrete, observable trends in the economy, finetuned over decades by thousands of experts. The second: polls about sentiment. Which one is more likely going haywire, do you think?

A number of Wall Street firms are predicting interest rate hikes later this year. In light of the White House’s current maneuvering, it would make you very skeptical of any Fed tightening action anytime soon.

Kevin Warsh’s first press conference was widely seen as hawkish. But was it? With the White House maneuvering to fire Fed governors and choose presidents, it’s clear they view Warsh as a reliable ally once they replace enough voters with WH allies.

The Supreme Court decision backing Lisa Cook from being fired, for now, was a victory for central bank independence. But it hasn’t stopped the Trump White House from its continued goal of controlling the Fed and interest rates.

The Atlanta Fed board has chosen some very able people in the past —Dennis Lockhart and Raphael Bostic most recently—and you would hope the board refuses to cave into political pressure to hire an unqualified Trump lackey.

The Trump administration is trying to install its own person as chief of the Atlanta Fed. This is contrary to the Congressional design of the Fed banks a century ago where the goal was for the banks to be a counter to Washington politics and Wall Street. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

To Warsh’s credit, at least for now people are arguing over his monetary policy tactics not central bank independence. No one is taking him as a Trump lackey not trying to do the best to achieve Fed mandates. Given his and Trump’s history, that’s a significant plus.

It’s true that virtually every Fed chief in recent decades has made communication gaffes near the start of his or her term. But an occasional miscommunication is preferable to no transparency at all.
121
Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
The no-transparency idea isn’t likely to last if and when markets get volatile in a misunderstanding of economic fundamentals and the Fed’s reaction function. There will just be too much pressure to set things straight.
171
Steve Matthews @stevematthews12.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
The reason for Fed transparency is the central bank doesn’t want markets to misunderstand the Fed’s intentions and cause unnecessary volatility in the real economy—like the Bernanke taper tantrum, which was reversed over time.

I think the more legitimate criticism is that the forward guidance and QE, which had to be wound down first, kept the Fed from moving aggressively against inflation as fast as it should have. Without the guidance, the Fed would have been able to change course faster.
