They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team had been sharing its research with the company’s A.I. model, Claude, and that its new finding matched their work.

Not sure if the #Dolphins will keep this up in the second half, but despite some continuing young team issues, they’ve shown a lot of improvement in a bunch of areas over the first two weeks in the first 30 against the Chiefs. Promising. #FinsUp

I’m old enough to remember Pat White who was similar size and playing style, and on the last play of Pat White’s very short career I thought I saw a man die on the football field. So naw dawg. Drafting Trinidad would be Trinibad

Dan Campbell was so red during that sideline interview he looked like a reverse Violet Beauregard. It’s like he went into the football chocolate factory, but instead of treats everything was just a fucking holding penalty. #nfl #lions #tnf

I was in second or third period sophomore Spanish class when the announcement about a plane hitting the WTC came over the PA. TVs went on and everyone across the school watched. Except for my algebra teacher a period later, who, as the towers burned, turned off the TV and tried to teach us proofs.

Three thoughts on this news item: 1. It's just one data point and not at a level of statistical significance for certainty. 2. Octavia Butler said count on the surprises, and this may turn out to be one of them! 3. Made possible by a global team using funding infrastructure that Trump is destroying.

Split photo of bright blue azurite and peach-colored smithsonite crystals.

The azurite forms clusters of round nodules with a matte, almost velvety-looking texture.

The smithsonite crystals are mostly discs with parallelogram faces. There are some black and gold-colores minerals mixed in.

Making university faculty sit in their offices from 8 am to 5 pm every day, 5 days a week, is insane and serves no conceivable academic purpose. The fact that admins and even *staff* are exempt from this absurd requirement shows the real goal is to make tenured faculty quit.
