From home, 7h30 pm. Alt👇
A deep orange sun glows through dark clouds over Touvre, France.
7:30 p.m. The sky is tinted an unusual amber colour, due to the thick smoke drifting from the massive and out of control wildfires currently devastating parts of Gironde.
Eerie and dramatic atmosphere.
Highly polluted air. Heavy smell of burned pines.

For Christmas this year, all the Aloe arborescens are flowering. We are in the southwest of France. Yes, climate is changing, fast.
The 60-80 cm racy inflorescence of the Aloe arborescens is erected and simple. The raceme is conical 20-30 cm by 10-12 cm in diameter, bearing many yellow/orange flowers. The façade of the Saint-Gervais church in Paris is a fine example of early 17th-century French classicism.

@astrolabe-science.fr I took this photo for you ! I wish you a wonderful Christmas Day.
On the mansion by the master watchmaker, Alphonse Blanc made in 1840, a very beautiful meridian of Average time, with a pierced disc, and analemma. The meridians of Paris and Turin are engraved on it. At that time, Savoy was not yet attached to France. The oblique lines are aligned with the signs of the Zodiacs where the sun enters the sign with the date of the 1st day of the month. A disc with eyelet was welded to an arrow supported by a foot decorated with stars.

Paris. Église Saint-Etienne-du-Mont. The rood screen. (Alt for details).
Despite a construction of the choir, then of the nave, spread over about thirty years, the architecture of the building offers a remarkable uniformity, clearly visible at the level of the piles and the vault. The Gothic architectural style is enriched with a Renaissance ornamentation, in a very harmonious marriage.

A magnificent jube (rood screen), the only one left in Paris, cuts the building in two. Architectural and artistic feat, its design dates from the early 1530s.

The tribune, nine meters long, is supported by a basket-ended vault that culminates at four meters.

A typical ornamentation of the early Renaissance (the écoinçons) is combined with the classical Gothic style of the railing and stairs, a style not without a Mooorish influence.

Paris. Église Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, built from 1492 to 1626. Here, the nave-transept crossing. (Alt for details)
The nave-transept crossing is one of the masterpieces of this church, built around 1584-1586.

This vault is a magnificent example of the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance style. The thirds that divide the space are gothic, as are the hanging keys and the openwork discs with fine chisels that furnish these spaces. The other motifs of ornamentation are totally Renaissance.

The artistic fantasy of the whole is typical of the late 16th century.

The central hanging key has a height of 2.40 meters. It is kept in balance almost five meters below the top of the vault thanks to curved links stiffened by an invisible metal reinforcement, present from the origin.

A beautiful visitor while gardening : a female Calopteryx virgo.
The body is blue-green metallic iridescent and the eyes blue-green.

The female has brown and fairly dark iridescent wings, adorned with a small white spot near the end. Its abdomen is blue with a bronze part at the end.

Spring starts here when my Euphorbia myrsinites is in bloom. Lush greens 💚
The center of a flowerbed in my courtyard shows in the foreground a flowering Euphorbia myrsinites. Just behind, with a disc of white marble pebbles at its base, my first homemade bonsai. All around are different succulents.

The different and rich shades of green, together, are visually attractive.

The first poem was written 44 years ago. The text in English is the translation of the French one, also here. (It is not always sad).
A DAY WITHOUT JOY

There are days when we want to be underground And not to be in love with a star
There are days when the sun is sad And the coffee bitter
There are days that we would like to scratch And that we would like to end
There are days we would like to see after Like bad nightmares
Erased gummed
There are days when the soup has no taste And life even less
There are days when we would like to be of marble Of wood or of iron
There are days when the night is long to come And sleep too
There are days when the sky is too heavy to carry And our body to support
There are days when the heart weighs
Like a tombstone

February 9th, 2022UN JOUR SANS JOIE

I'm exhausted and this feels like the best option for #FossilFriday this week. This is coprolite. What is coprolite, you ask? It's fossilized feces. It's mineralized, doesn't smell. It's important for science to find pollen or pieces of bone. Also proves you can polish a turd.
