There is something deeply wrong with trying to kill a person twice, then sending her to a hospital for life saving measures so that they can try to kill her again.

I’ve become obsessed with the disappearing night sky. I miss going outside wherever I was and seeing the stars! Glad to be able to write about this for @us.theguardian.com. Thanks to the kind readers who have already sent me emails about their own night skies. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The night sky is getting 10% brighter every year. We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
If more cities start regulating outdoor lighting, we humans could make the environment better for all living creatures

I’ve been asked to weigh in on the debate over whether to bring an iced coffee to an interview. It doesn't matter. Iced coffee is NOT why it's hard to land a job right now, and it's NOT why Gen Z can't get ahead. Our economy is rigged. We need to change that.

Following the Pope’s encyclical about AI, you’re going to see a lot more religious intervention in shaping public opinion about tech companies. There are only two social institutions resilient enough to counter AI politically — states and religion. They bought the first. Standby on the second.

A parent friend told me years ago that for them every day was a 24-hr fire drill. I think about it all the time and give parents space and flexibility, just in case. Do parents like this have a to-do list? Maybe. Could a computer make meaning of it? Absolutely not. Could I?? Also prob not.

So you know previous waves of technological fabulism the tech companies threw a little loose change at social behavioral research and user interface experience. whats interesting about AI interesting is that they aren’t even pretending to care about how people use the technology.

A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.

Hospital ai vs insurance ai is a beautiful computer centipede for siphoning money out of healthcare and into hospital and insurance profits. Centralized costing via universal healthcare would fix that.

“Friction” is humans. There is nothing else to build systems for but humans. They mean a system built for human flourishing won’t survive and they might be right. But not because the agents are so good but because AI is politics.

They served their time in prison. Then the bills arrived.
Hundreds of CT residents have had money seized through a law that allows the state to charge a fee for every day a person spends in prison.

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.
