New paper out in @animalecology.bsky.social ! 🔥🕺💃🔥 Across 6 European cities, great tits breeding in more impervious territories had paler carotenoid-based yellow plumage! 🐦‍⬛🏙️ doi.org/10.1111/1365... Huge thanks to all co-authors and everyone involved in long-term monitoring who made this possible!
Adult great tit held in the hand during field monitoring, with its yellow breast plumage clearly visible. A small pink field label is attached beside the bird.Three-panel figure showing the relationship between great tit carotenoid chroma and impervious surface cover. Panel A shows individual observations from six European cities with a negative fitted trend. Panel B shows 1,000 bootstrap fits, nearly all with negative slopes. Panel C shows leave-one-city-out estimates, with the relationship remaining negative regardless of which city is removed.

Wednesday El Niño update - Unsurprisingly, sea surface temperatures still remain record warm across the central Pacific. But when discussing headlines like the “strongest” El Niño, it’s an oversimplification to ignore the role of long-term tropical warming (from climate change). Data: OISSTv2.1 🌊
Line graph time series of daily sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region. Years are shown from 1982 to 2025 in shades of blue to light yellow, and 2026 is shown in red. Climatologically, the largest anomalies are during the boreal winter in terms of magnitude. Data is from OISSTv2.1. (1/) Some inspirational words from long-term BBS volunteer and member of the BTO Regional Network Muriel Cadwallender about surveying Upland Rovers squares. Although not for the faint hearted, you can make a one off visit to an upland square during the BBS survey season… @btobirds.bsky.social
The quote says: The achievement of reaching remote squares, after a seemingly vertical climb, with the reward of panoramic views of the Cheviots, singing Skylarks, ‘pipping’ pipits, calling Curlews, and Snipe drumming is all the incentive needed to visit this beautiful part of Northumberland.
