(Also non-Muslim Arabs and Persians and I guess butch women and insufficiently macho men and anyone who a bigot might perceive as an acceptable target of their bigotry regardless of whether the target technically falls into the category or not.)

That said I don't want to downplay how much transphobia and Islamophobia also hurt, uh, trans people and muslims. Like they are real bigotries on top of being ways to launder another bigotry.

Transphobia and Islamophobia are both ways to launder misogyny. "Oh, I'm not misogynist, I'm for protecting women and girls." It strikes me similar to how Canada spent decades using "At least we're not the US" as a way to launder its poor treatment of indigenous populations.

Vancouver’s airport said in 2016 that privatization would be an “irreversible mistake.” Now, that’s exactly what the federal government plans to do for YVR and Canada’s other three largest airports. zurl.co/bmDkw

It's a conflation of two aphorisms. To "chase that bag" means to pursue a payday, but to be "left holding a bag" means to be left holding responsibility for a bad situation.

Given how few video games I play it might win by default, but on the other hand Wings of Theve comes out in a few days.

Maybe they'll heavily patch it and I can come back in a year and it'll be better. For now I would much, much rather play through Control again than touch this thing.

Also the open world activities mostly feel like filler.

Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Descent had better orientation fuckery; Ghost in the Shell for PS1 had better orientation freedom; DMC1 had better combat. And Control had a more compelling scenario, central mystery, and protagonist.

Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
And I get that they're limiting wall climbing because they're using tall buildings as barriers between city zones for loading purposes, but I don't care; if you give me something that *seems like* it promises Gravity Rush but doesn't deliver Gravity Rush I am not actually required to extend grace.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
You get cool gravity manipulation powers but they only work on designated anomalous surfaces. Jesse's traversal powers were more limited in Control but her float felt more generous (Dylan gets float early but it's a worse float) and at least they always worked the way you wanted them to.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Traversal is also bad. Dylan gets a dodge-into-sprint move like Bayonetta except instead of lasting forever, the sprint lasts six seconds. You can spend a skill point to increase that to eighteen. Running around felt better in Prototype.

Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
So both the perfect dodge and finisher damage boosts are unreliably accessible.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
How do you do finishers? Stun enemies. You stun enemies by doing attacks, but attacks also damage them, so it's easy to kill enemies you're trying to stun, so there's little in the way of reliable sources of finishers for getting damage boosts.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The game runs on having low base damage and getting damage buffs from doing finishers and perfect dodges, but because all the enemies look the same, perfect dodges in big groups are hard because there's little legibility of enemy behavior.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
All the normal enemies look the same, just glowing red/orange mutant corpses. I can't tell one mook from another. The heavy enemies are somewhat more differentiated by silhouette but not much.
100
Stephen Lea Sheppard @stephenls.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The combat is infuriatingly limited. This wants to be DMC but there's no directional move inputs and no weapon switching, so they do things like put launchers as combo finishers and make you go into the pause menu to switch weapons. Shit sucks.

Dark Souls 2 is missing two things: 1) A fog door that opens up into a hallway blocked by a petrified statue, such that you pass through it and are immediately blocked unless you have a Fragrant Branch of Yore. 2) A shortcut log that falls into a pit when you kick it and doesn't make a shortcut.

Trying to go see the new Resident Evil movie but apparently before I can enter the auditorium I have to have the spade key to unlock the door? And I only have the hearts key, which unlocks the route to the concession stand. Anyone know where to go next? A bit stuck

It’s like: you didn’t like the business/use the service anyways then the union isn’t talking to you. If you hear “boycott Starbucks” and you smugly say, “Not a problem for me because I make my own coffee,” Fuck off. You’re not boycotting anything you’re giving yourself a Participation Trophy.

also when there's a boycott on we really don't have to do the whole "I didn't like their stuff anyway" thing. that is Facebook thread behavior. just be in solidarity with the union it's so easy!

Alternate universe where the Hobbit trilogy still exists and it's still three movies as mandated by the studio but Peter Jackson got three years of pre-production.

As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.

There is no ethical consumption of HBO’s Harry Potter series
You can’t without supporting Rowling’s transphobic bigotry.

“If I take a stupid populist position that appeals to morons hard enough, it’ll insulate me from the negative PR effects of my corrupt evil” is, alas, not exclusive to politicians on the right.

Pro-data-center politicians know people hate data centers, but working against them would be hard and they don’t want to do it, so instead they’re trying to cram as much “populist” garbage into their platforms as they can to balance out not doing that.
