Through his first 2 gp before the injury he was averaging 18:11 in TOI on 22 shifts. He was their 3rd D.

Yeah 2 years is a problem, but he was in game shape and ready for the season before this injury so it isn't exactly like lost development time. It's more just missing years in his prime which sucks.

Yeah I had mentioned it to Jared elsewhere. I just think it's easily fixed, wouldn't be particularly stressful for him, and I think the social cost (warranted or not) outweighs the benefits of the rest.

He has yet to be on the ice for anything above 40% xG at even strength in any game so far. His defensive play and positioning could clearly use work. He isn't a finished product. Practice will be part of his improvement.

And I am sure he is spending time in the gym, the issue is helping him adapt to game situations/scenarios he isn't getting reps on vs NHLers. He can't do that in the gym.

I think placating the fan base and punditry isn't particularly dumb if *not* doing so inevitably leads to added media scrutiny and mental pressure. This is all quite predictable. Whether or not you think it's unreasonable doesn't change the fact it is there and was always going to be.

Either way, I'm not saying I know what is best for him. I just think the "rest" argument rings a bit hollow this early in the season for a healthy elite athlete at age 18. He has played 58:22 through 4 games across a span of 8 days. That isn't a crazy workload remotely.

I get the argument about conserving his energy, but if he is going to eventually develop into a player that is counted on to play big minutes and in key situations, he should be getting his body used to the workload and practicing those key situations (that he isn't seeing in games currently).

So I'm seeing a lot of articles criticizing McKenna for skipping *optional* practices at the start of the season because he is 18 and wants to conserve energy for games. My perspective leans a bit towards agreeing that he shouldn't be skipping out on practice reps when he has yet to play 16 mins.

HS student protests disrupting a major country politically is definitely something the rest of the world should pay attention to. These kids don't have voting rights, but they still have considerable leverage and power to impact wider society. In many Western nations their concerns are ignored.
