I agree the motion was unnecessary, counterproductive and damaging. But I understand the other side’s view. It’s not wrong to say the Israeli apartheid state is racist. I’m jewish (& quaker) and a Green party member and I’m still angrier about the genocide itself and Labour’s proscription of PA.

If someone tells you not to worry and Flavio is somehow more intelligent/competent, less bigoted/corrupt than Jair they are lying to you.

Nice piece. When I think of Englishness, Powell and Pressburger immediately come to mind for me as well.

I don’t really understand the party either. Zack Polanski and Liz Truss both started out in the Lib Dems.

What an amazing story and I’m happy your grandfather chose the name Boyd. My mother’s mother was a Jewish refugee from Hamburg and my father’s mother’s father was a Jewish refugee from Warsaw.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Obviously pandering to the far right. If they genuinely wanted to modernise rules and be more consistent with other countries then naturalised citizens should be treated on a par with other citizens in terms of living overseas and acquiring a third citizenship.

A very good point as usual from @jamesbowes01.bsky.social The main objective of Mahmood's proposals was always to kick out care workers (as she has more or less said). That was always an economically, politically and morally bankrupt policy. Without it, the whole package falls apart.

I try to look on the bright side. If Burnham or Rayner, say, can deliver electoral reform - something like the Irish system for instance - they would be the best PM for a long time.

Not even the Nazis expressly announced they were committing war crimes. Indeed, at Nuremberg war crimes were denied. But here, openly, the US Secretary for Defense is explicitly admitting to committing war crimes.

What a dignified spectacle. The worst people in the world somehow manage to gain brutal authoritarian power, and then support each fighting wars costing countless billions and, collectively, hundreds of thousands of lives, just to put off being tried in domestic courts for criminal offences.

Lula, the president of Brazil, was born in Pernambuco and moved to São Paulo when he was 7. He is considered white in Brazil and the prejudice against him among many in the south and southeast is more to do with class snobbery.

Stephen Boyd @stephenbod.bsky.social · 08/03/2026
It’s complicated - there’s a certain element of racism. Someone like Ghirotti in the film would be a descendant of Italians (or Germans etc) and obviously considered himself superior to people from Pernambuco with more of a mixed origin.

I also had no idea there were Angolan refugees in Brazil at that time. But unfortunately prejudice against people from the north or northeast is still all too common in places like São Paulo.

I loved it and appreciated it more on 2nd viewing - I thought there were many themes that you don’t have to be Brazilian to understand. It was as much about fatherhood, machismo, generational trauma, remembering vs. lying about/forgetting the past as it was about the absurdity of the dictatorship.
