Always thought, as most do, that capitalism is the least bad system. Perhaps I was wrong 😬😬

We have a really serious problem with judges in Spain. They should retire everyone over 60. All Francoists.

Comments from the DT article about Rob Kenyon. Reform are on the way out...this attitude is politically suicidal.

Antonio Pigafetta describing how in Indonesia in the 1520s, each family had to give one or two girls to the king. Colonialism was a blessing for many ordinary people in history.

Hadley Freeman, a Jew, conflates Israel and Jews, which the IHRA definition says is anti-Semitic! The Gaza attempted genocide really broke so many liberals. Why on earth are prominent Jews being anti-Semitic? They've gone mad

What's the alternative? Leave Starmer in place and watch Labour get 18% at the next election? Even Blairites like me find Starmer to be very right wing... something went very wrong with that lad!

Antonio Pigafetta, on the first journey around the world, in 1520, reaches Borneo, and encounters Leaf Insects for the first time. I swear, this is one of the best books I've ever read!

Fucking Magellan, every time he arrives somewhere he fires off ALL his cannon as a gesture of friendship and everyone, predictably, shits themselves 🤣

Utterly remarkable moment as Magellan meets a local Philippine ruler (who would have known the Philippines, China and been aware of Malaysia), and shows him a map of the whole world, and explains he's just sailed halfway around it to get there....

I'm reading Antonio Pigafetta's book about his trip around the world with Magellan between 1519-21. Surprised at what a fun read it is. Well paced, engaging, and the ethnology is fascinating. Here an encounter between Pigafetta and a native of the Straight of Magellan

Sanchez played a smart move here. Good for Spain, good for Spanish children, popular with parents, and now he's being attacked by Musk, who is hated in Spain (we all know what Musk got up to with Epstein)

The Christmas light show at Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona. So grateful after 40 years in England that I'm able to live among the beautiful people and culture of Catalonia. It's on another level.

€3 billion is just short of the annual budget of Barcelona. With only €300 million, we created loads of streets like this (and the UK has very little of this kind of beauty in its towns)

Fray Montesinos' utterly remarkable sermon from 4th December 1511. Following this he returned to Spain, said the same the King Ferdinand, and provoked a genuine crisis of conscience within the Empire.

In 1500, Queen Isabella order slaves taken by Colombus to be returned to the Carribbean and freed. One remarkable young lady decided tribal life was not for her, and opted to stay in Spain. What a life!

Writing a Substack about the people who died chasing this man's hallucinations. Superb photo. Robert Peary was arguably the worst of the Arctic explorers. He lied about reaching the North Pole, took 6 Inuit to the US in 1897 as 'specimens' (4 of whom died), had an affair with an Inuit lady and 1/2

Reading Bartholomé de las Casas 'A Brief Account if the Destruction of the Indies', and despite it being 500 years ago, the sheer joy the Conquistadors took in their murderous actions is thoroughly modern. You can see it in every conflict around the world.

The Telegraph is the propaganda wing of National Action now, and Alison Pearson is a dangerous terrorist leader trying to incite Brits to attack Muslims. This is an astonishingly racist piece - worse than Goodhart or even Carswell @samfr.bsky.social @snellarthur.bsky.social @sturdyalex.bsky.social

If social media platforms were classified as publishers, you could simply pick up the owners of Substack, drop them in prison for ten years, and this nonsense would disappear. Should have been done from day one

That looks fantastic, Sam, thank you! I shall read the rest when a new job appears 😉 (Hopefully today, who knows!) There's an interview here, at 1:23:00 with Neil O'Brien, where Adam Bolton asks about the phrase 'white British', which may be of interest; www.thetimes.com/radio/show/2...

One result of the Franklin Expedition was that the Netsilingmiut colonised Igjulingmiut lands in east Boothia Peninsular and King William Island, killing all but a handful

The whole of the 1840s saw very cold winters. Two years earlier in 1844 the brave British colonists at Churchill worked hard with local Indians to save as many Inuit as possible.

Everyone knows the story of John Franklins lost expedition, stranded off the coast of King William Island between 1846-48. They all died, even after eating each other. But those years were brutally cold, and the local Inuit tribes didn't fair much better

Life for many Inuit women was incredibly grim prior to colonialisation. Infanticide, murder and being 'given away'...

...officially discovered until 1500 (by Cabral, another Portuguese explorer). And how did the cantino map of 1502 show so much of the Brazilian coast only two years after it's discovery?

Over at the Telegraph, they are furious that the King will pay tribute to brown people who died. But don't forget, these are not fascists or a threat to Britain 🙄

The Telegraph used to be a paper of record. Now, it's Nazi readers are happily discussing how no-one on the flight from India was British. Again, too many journos claiming no Nazis in the UK, when clearly there are a lot!

You can imagine the old Pilgrims tweeting the same crap. Having grown up in the reformed evangelical church, always felt that by starting with that nonsense they were always in trouble (it's very fashy!!)
