The millipede you rescued was sentenced to death by exile to the realm of the giants. The bloody path of revenge it now carves in the legs of those that framed it will go on to be sung of for generations, or possibly be immortalized in a classic of insect literature.

So, I am not personally a visual artist, so I'm not doing artfight. I do, however, live with one, and have a PSA for all Artfighters currently in the throes of combat. *Points affectionately* Unshrimp your posture

I want everyone to remember that Y2K absolutely happened, and would have been devastating to global tech, if not for programmers working absurdly hard under crunch conditions to create a solution. Much like that, Climate Change does not solve itself. We need to put in the work.

Rather, a responsible fandom should use the fact that they are considered a devoted market to pressure publishers for better pay and working conditions for their creators. As it stands, however, many fandoms act more like consumers at a holiday sale. And creators are getting trampled in the rush.

Because, at the end of the day, it's the same reason that AI bullshit is so popular with exploiters. The Artist is considered as a distant concern to the Art. The Commodity. The Product. This is not to say that fans should not purchase a creator's work! Far from it! (cont)

If we extend the poster the maximum amount of good faith, it might be read as an attempt at jovial ribbing. "I greatly enjoyed this and I wish there was more. Thousands of people agree with me." But publishers see that shit and raise panel/page minimums. (cont)

For an excellent example of this, one need only look at Webtoon. Go on to any comic with a good amount of front-page popularity. Read the episode. Scroll down past the credits. At least one of the top 3 comments is probably going to be some form of "Too short." (cont)

Fandom serves the role of reinforcing these practices, where anything in the fandom is to be consumed, regardless of the practices that go into making it. A fandom can garner genuine enjoyment from a creator's work, and still negatively affect them by creating expectations around releases. (cont)

This is the MO of major publishers, as they have gradually over the years tapered off of the services that publishers traditionally provide (Editing, marketing, cover art, awards shows), focusing instead on bringing on creators that already have a following. A guaranteed market. (cont)

As a creators work becomes popular and gains a following, people who are not the creator start deciding how they are going to make the most money off of the work by exploiting both the creator and the fans. (cont)

There's been a lot of talk about fandom and how it can put horrendous pressure on creators, especially if the story doesn't go in the way that vocal factions wanted/expected it to. But it also places that expectation when it does. When the fandom enjoys. It's an issue of commodification (cont)

If you really care about preventing government tyranny, your #1 priority must be making sure criminals have rights.

And that's not a joke or an exaggeration.

If criminals don't have rights, then all the government has to do is find some excuse to label people as criminals, and those people will no longer have rights. It's what literally every tyrannical government in all of history has done.

Human sacrifice is alive and well, and I think of the child-kings. If one particular telling of history is to be believed, then at least the so-called "primitive culture" celebrated their sacrifices.

If you oppose AI, you're "against progress," if you oppose the war, clearly you love oppression. Hypocrisy upon hypocrisy, never collapsing under its own weight, because the hypocrites put that weight firmly on others' shoulders.

All while building data centers in poor neighborhoods, giving children breathing conditions usually seen in 60+ year old chronic smokers. The US LOVES human sacrifice, especially in the name of some greater cultural growth.

The book, and most people living in the US today, would have you believe that child sacrifice is a thing of the past, of "lesser" cultures that the US has supplanted. All while starting wars for the vanity and economic corruption of a few old men.

How many were filled with regret as the date approached, and how many with fervor? What doubts filled their minds? Did any of those who did not look forward to the end still consider the time in the sun worth it? But, they at least had their time in the sun.

I think about what they must have thought, living in luxury, but on a timer. Mortality to the date, by their own choosing.

Humans have always been humans, and the concept of a brief stardom with a tragic burnout was not new back then either. Though, in this context, it was less a tragic burnout and more a martyrdom. Also not a new concept.

I think about those child-kings every now and again. The book I was being taught from must have framed them as volunteers, because the "why" of it all is the subject of much of my wonderings.

To their credit, both of my teachers attempted to talk about the nuance of what the sacrifices meant to the cultures, though the book was definitely written with a heavy bias towards modern US cultural mindset. "Hey, look how these scary primitives did human sacrifice, spooky," that sort of thing.

At the end of which, they were sacrificed in a religious ceremony for the prosperity of the culture in question. By no means the only forms of human sacrifice that the books talked about, but that's the one that my brain fixated on.

One of the things stuck in my mind from that class was the book's depiction of the child-kings, children or young adults who would be selected or volunteered to live like a king for a day/season/year

A long, rambling thought re: Human Sacrifice, AI Data Centers, War, Cultural Supremacy One of the things I still remember from grade school was the brief period we were taught about central/south American cultures in world history class.

There are not enough hours in the day nor characters in a post to deal with WhatAboutIsms, or genuine issues of criminalization of identity, social/economic class, urban planning to support exclusion, 18/?

In that case, would you prefer a violent, dehumanizing system of incarceration? Or one that treats inmates with dignity? (Again, prison abolitionist here, would rather the whole thing be done away with, but working with what we've got in the immediacy) 16/?

If everyone is a criminal, and prisons are full of ordinary people, and new laws are being made all the time to criminalize every aspect of existence, you must prepare for the eventuality that the state might decide to imprison you. 15/?

This is especially topical during the current push of laws to make a swath of online activities illegal, as these spaces are new territory for law. None of us like to think about it, there is the potential for an enforcement sweep if these laws pass, especially in the current political climate 14/?

If everyone is a criminal, then we have to banish the mental construct that a "criminal" is some sort of dangerous "other" who exists only to cause harm. Prisons are not generally full of murderers and rapists and cult leaders. 11/?

All of this is why it has been ruled in court that the police do not have to know the law, only to have "reasonable suspicion" that you are breaking a law, to detain you. They can decide what to charge you with later. 8/?
