“It hampers the ability for the region to grow, if we don’t see more people move to transit.” I think that ship has sailed, people are actively leaving or seeking to leave.

This looks fascinating. Truly wish I was there.

Halifax Is Not “Becoming Unlivable.” It Is Being Governed That Way.
A city does not become unlivable overnight.

And then after transit inadequacy there is this reality. I honestly feel like I’m experiencing a constructive dismissal by my chosen hometown.

Halifax buses are not fit for purpose, and relying on them for anything with a time stamp is officially causing major anxiety in my daily life.

Agree, not enough. Every single regular pedestrian experiences frequent close calls due to infrastructure enabled left turns on green during the walk sign, also right on green and red. Many are struck. This is an unacceptable hazard and normality that must be addressed, system-wide.

A car grazed me, full body, turning right on red from Cogswell to Upper Water.I had the green man. I fell backwards. He drove on and away. That was as close as I’ve been to being hit by a car and I’m very shaken.

The cost of urban sprawl in HRM is playing out in real time with peninsular car infrastructure needs outstripping physical possibility. Investment in alternative travel would enable sustainable growth in this town. I’d call it a city, but with current transit options, it’s an impossible label.

Bus stop this morning. That was bout 1.5 ft to step over. Was with someone who couldn’t manage it. We waved down bus from a busy nearby drive way. A full 24 hours after the storm. Really is this good enough? #halisky

Last year, five pedestrians were struck and killed in HRM within the first six months, & over 20 fatalities were reported by August (total for year tbc) Follow-up joint advocacy with HRM requesting a detailed action plan was unsuccessful. This is the response from the Province (thread)

Day before yesterday was almost struck by a vehicle while crossing Lacewood at Willet. The crossing light has just come on, I stepped out and a pickup truck nearly ran over my feet turning right on red. Right on red is dangerous.

I assert that every museum should have at least one inexplicably sketchy room. It may have just normal museum things in it or have something off like a reconstructed 1880s town¹, but it should just be...strange feeling.

The bus on route 2 from Fairview into town, currently stationary on Main Street due to down power line. That’s in both directions. No resolution in sight. #Halisky.

This reminds me of something I read about yew trees in churchyards, often pre-dating the built church itself. Apparently Druids saw them as linked to life and death. Look it up, fascinating stuff!

“… their song while quite fleeting is a lovely droopy descent down a simple scale of notes. It's very similar to the chaffinch song, only purer, and without the musical somersault that the chaffinsh seems to finish on”

A new book is shedding light on the mystery of a Second World War marine tragedy that was kept under a cloak of secrecy despite decimating the ranks of Halifax’s harbour pilots.

Foreground: I’ve absolutely no problem w decision to ban woodland activities. BUT: Without car in Halifax, have to walk through/in woods to get to ill-placed bus stops. I have a woodland path to my bus stop, 10 mins. Or, walk way round on busy road with no crossings -29 mins.
