The thing that gets me about these lurid anti-Zionist statements, like the one the Greens just passed, is that it is *so fucking easy* to criticise the Israeli government without engaging in that type of language.

To be fair to them I think the main focus might have been denoising microscopy images and the capybara was the fun example lmfaooooo

Tbf, a lot of Signal Processing Funding in Research probably comes via private industry partners in defence since the govt isn't too helpful

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Oh yeah nah, my field is less Gen AI but more signal processing, Bayesian applications, uncertainty quantification and such. Most work has origins in Los Alamos research but then really only took off in the 80s with the rise of computing and has unsurprisingly become bloated with garbage genAI now.

How did they get the govt to fund that but not straight up AI/ML? What is the secret to govt funding
100
Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
True but the governments constant insistance on how vital the defence sector, AI and Machine Learning are implies they would increase funding to the EPSRC and such, yet the exact opposite is happening... It's more the complete hypocrisy from the government that annoys me

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
For my sector, most of the postdoc side tends to be co-funded by industry or contracted on behalf of industry and don't pay terribly thanks to them. Traditional academia jobs ofc are few and far between and pay shit and are never permanent contracts now lmfao.Industry side outside of govt is not bad

Honestly it is a policy failure because the economic benefits from being a leading hub for research has been fully stifled by constant cuts to research sectors, insane levels of competing expected by UKRI between equally amazing research hubs across the UK, all whilst harping on about it being vital
100
Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
From an academic viewpoint, we absolutely could if we actually focused and properly invested on it. We have so many of the world's leading academics here in Britain in the field who end up leaving the UK for better opportunities literally anywhere else because of how bad the funding gets here.

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
For a government that harps on about defence & security, machine learning and AI, and how we need to invest more in these sectors and research....They sure as hell don't make it appealing financially lmfao.

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
No jobs in these sectors in Leeds for some reason. Mostly in Manchester, the home counties, sometimes Liverpool, otherwise obscure rural villages and towns near the coast lmfao. And ofc Oxbridge and occasionally London.

In Liverpool I could rent high end 1 bed flat in the city centre and live comfortably on that :( Why London so expensive sigh

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yeah but on the other hand, do 20 and 30 year olds on average even live comfortably in London with all the whacko costs lmfao

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yeah this would be the salary of a job I could apply for after finally finishing an undergrad and PhD in Sheffield and Liverpool which has been relatively comfortable money wise....and I am incredibly hesitant of anything advertised in London and similar because of the increased costs...

‘Why is your cat blue?’: Wilbur, the pet who changed colour, puzzles owners
Family search for answers on social media after their furry friend returned home with an unusual makeover Wilbur the cat is usually a rather elegant grey, black and white creature so his human family were, to say the least, a little taken aback when she arrived back home bright blue. Concern that Wilbur might have been the target of an unkind paint attack turned to relief when it turned out that she had gatecrashed a neighbour’s gender reveal party and rolled around in blue dye. Any bloomfs that are good at identifying birds? Merlin Bird ID says it's a northern lapwing, which I guess makes sense being on the coast here in Liverpool, but they are quite rare/endangered in the UK, no?

We should be looking to what currently is working within NHS trusts, like Manchester, and then adapting, expanding and implementing that nationwide. Because the current method of individual trusts all having their own data systems and contracts is frankly absurd. (4/4)

Very Grumpy Statistician @statistic.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Now whilst it is very important to finally make the NHS have a centralised database, to help with medical research and efficiency within and between trust through easier interaction, I am not sure an external company should be responsible for providing this service. (3/4)

If you look at the comparison of the pilot results (blue) to the other London NHS trusts not using the Palantir-FDP (yellow),4 there is no significant difference, implying this improvement would have happened regardless. Source: doi.org/10.1136/bmj.s6 80 (2/4)

Based on the statements and "results" announced about the 2022 NHS pilot of the Palantir Federated Data Platform at Chelsea and Westminster Foundation Trust sounded very impressive, boasting a 28% reduction in elective surgery times. However not all is as it seems... (1/4)

has anyone ever asked why the TEF scores exist when they seem, quite honestly very counter-intuitive? Like I do not believe for a second that Sheffield Hallam is scoring higher than the University of Sheffield, especially on student outcomes of all things?

The most anomalous maximum temperature recording regarding stations and their records seems to be 33.3ºC at Wellesbourne. This beats the old May record for the station by 6.1ºC before this spell (27.2ºC, 2010) as well as the June record by 2.2ºC (31.2ºC, 1976), extraordinary.
Spaghetti plot for Wellesbourne from 1959 to 2026 with all daily temperatures on record shown with 2026's observed maximum temperatures shown with the spike of 33.3ºC at Wellesbourne noted
