I’m guest editing the next issue of Agita; send me your weirdest <1000 word stories about weird art. Authors from marginalized backgrounds encouraged and prioritized. No AI bullshit. The weirder the better. agitamag.com/submissions/
Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

The Eyes of the World.
A scene from Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun, in which Typhon, a two-headed man is overpowering the protagonist, Severian from the inside of the eye of a mountain sculpted in Typhon's image.

Would be interesting to hear what the root cause is, as it’s odd that all 3 went down. My initial thought was perhaps outages in some cloud infrastructure like AWS but that would cause outages across a bunch of other unrelated services as well, so that’s unlikely.

Last time I went to the cinema was for Backrooms and someone in the row in front of me was recording voice messages to people, and the couple to my side were very loudly going “what the fuck is going on” after every big moment. Like if you wanna chat take a quick step outside it takes 30 seconds

I love how the majority of the speakers at this supposed ‘Irish culture’ festival are just alternative health people. Is not drinking tap water part of Irish culture?

What this does is create a confused paranoid space, sowing enough doubt so that AI writing can continue to slip into the culture easier and easier

2) makes emotional appeals centered around the author’s feelings, “imagine losing this big debut book deal because of this” 3) creates a paranoid environment, “this could happen to any of us, no one is safe”.

There’s a growing trend of smokescreening for AI writing online. It’s this recurring common response to high-profile allegations of AI writing, which: 1) casts doubt on the allegations through gestures to detection software unreliability and human fallibility

One of the artists who has rapidly gained attention in recent years, is Irish stained glass creator Harry Clarke. The Dublin national gallery has continued to collect his exquisite work like this one ‘The Enchantment of Bottom’ (1922).

So the dumbest mfers on the planet are suing my friend for defamation cause she was outspoken about not wanting their racist festival in her local community. It is a clear and obvious attempt to silence their critics with costly frivolous lawsuits, and wear them down emotionally and financially.

SFF, we need to talk. I'm not here to rag specifically on Bona, who did the right thing by going public. No, I'm looking at all of you. Or at least, 15 of you. Because this right here? This is buckwild.
Once we’d picked our hearts off the floor, we started digging: Bella had minimal online presence, first appearing in May 2025. Since then, she’d accumulated a remarkable publication record (we counted 15 published stories in 12 months), across name publishers and small or community-minded outlets, including several paying SFWA rates (like us).

There are plenty of takeaways from "punk anthology accepting AI", but one I don't see: if you aim for the aesthetics of _who is writing_ rather than _what is written_ you'll end up missing something extremely obvious when you do actually read the manuscript

🚨EXCITING NEWS🚨 For the first time ever, Typebar Magazine will be hosting a FREE seminar on pitching shortform nonfiction. Join our editor @wolfbridge.bsky.social as he discusses the so-called rules of pitching and the reasons behind them. RSVP here and remember, it's FREE: luma.com/3srmehk6
A graphic that says "Pitching (Shortform) Nonfiction" with the Typebar magazine logo on the bottom. There's also a stick figure clip art thing where it's a stick figure guy next to a height chart.

The text of the event listing reads: How to Pitch Nonfiction: The So-Called Rules and the Reasons Behind Them

It will be Monday 7/20 starting at 7:00pm eastern and ending at 8:00pm eastern. Want help learning how to craft precise pitches for your shortform nonfiction work? Sure, it's easy enough to find the "rules" of pitching online. But why do publications have those rules in the first place, and how does a writer benefit from following them?

This seminar will answer both questions. In doing so, we'll teach you how to make your pitches elegant and impactful while also telling you how to stay confident when you inevitably receive rejections.

Typebar Magazine's editor Matt Wolfbridge will host the event, sharing the insights he's learned from running the Typebar submission inbox, his 15-year career in media, and MFA in creative writing (try not to hold the last two against him).

The event is FREE for all.

So. I hate to do this. We were pulled over on the way back, it turns out we forgot to get the MOT after that lady hit us with her car. We are now without the car until we can get it sorted (it'll likely fail, too) and poor, so we could do with the money for the MOT and additional disability costs.

This is reassuring. I’ve been working on some horror stuff set here in Ireland and was worried it might not be saleable because of that, though the setting is integral to the stories and I would not change it
