He missed his husband.

Missed watching him putter around the kitchen with Billie Holiday crooning in the background because sometimes Simon loved listening to old-timey jazz and blues and soul, singing along under his breath, which absolutely nobody would believe John if he told anyone.

Well, maybe Price and Gaz, but he wouldn't bet on it.

The bird, a beautiful African Grey if Simon remembers correctly from the videos he's seen of the smart little things, squawks as it puffs up as if in pride. "Aye! Am feckin' funny," she chirps, shaking her head side to side.

What's even scarier than the man's mohawk is the near perfect Scottish accent the bird has.

He knew they talked. Didn't know they could also be Scottish.

Fuckin' hell.

"Yer nae!" The man squabbles back. "Yer a very unfunny hairy coo, is what ye are."

The bird lowers into a crouch, bright red tail high, hissing, before lunging, nipping, what Simon thinks is playfully, at the man's fingers, and they break out into yet another bickering match.

For the first few days of leave, John 'Soap' MacTavish still wakes with the dawn. In the before times, he would lie there annoyed at the sun and his body while trying uselessly to force himself back to sleep.

But that was then.

Now he rolls out of bed with a purpose. He visits the lav, then starts his morning workout. He loses count of his push-ups daydreaming about going to the cliffs today and ends up doing an extra set. He showers, but doesn't bother to shave after, too excited to check on the guest out in the garden.

He grins to himself as he starts the coffee maker. No matter that this is the third time the dragon's agreed to spend leave here, a part of Soap is still unable to believe that Ghost agreed to come home with him. This will be the longest they've spent off base together. It'll be the longest the dragon's been off base since he joined them on the task force.

OR

After a long run of back to back missions, the 1-4-1 are finally on leave. Which means, Soap gets to bring his favorite dragon back to Scotland for some much needed R&R only for said dragon to give the Scot the surprise of his life.
