Sadly, I will not be able to attend this morning's election of the Lord Mayor at Common Hall at Guildhall in the City of London. With such short notice of Alderman Tim Hailes' decision to stand-down, this will be a very 'interesting' meeting of voters. I wish Tim Hailes well.

Good morning, Mark @markannand.eurosky.social & thank you. Yes, it is remarkable to think that there's a river running under one's feet in that area. Not far from where Harold Steggles took his view of "Warner Street" in 1935, one can hear the River Fleet running underground through a drain grid.

The view across an open square with fountains, planters and parking spaces in the middle. In the background is a modern parade of shops beneath an office tower block. The postcard was sent in July 1972.

On day two of our watercolour themed week, here's another great favourite of mine which was painted whilst the artist concerned was still only 15 years old! This is "The Mill, Whitstable" by Walter Steggles from July 15th 1924. It is roughly only 6ins x 4ins. #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Hatch End station originally opened in 1840 on the London & Birmingham Railway. It was rebuilt in 1911, and poet John Betjemen described it as "half-way between a bank and a medium-sized country house".

Laughing Boy www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
This cheerfully laughing boy with sparkly eyes and dishevelled hair is not a portrait, but a ‘tronie’ – a study of a laughing child. Laughing figures are unusual, as laughter is one of the most difficult expressions to capture. The virtuoso Hals painted the boy very directly and spontaneously, using remarkably loose brushstrokes. And yet he knew exactly what he was doing. The bridge of the boy’s nose, for example, is painted with a single well-placed stroke of white.
