Wanna be the Developer and Emerging Technologies Specialist at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH)? IATH is part of the UVA Library's DH Center (librarians are cool) + you'd get to work with new and emerging projects as well as the 30+ years of legacy DH project.

Yahbut... this has been the case for decades. I was factoring health insurance in my job decisions back in the early 90s.

It is so sad. Kids are chasing the carb-laden thrills of illicit lasagna and speakeasy spaghetti with extra garlic. It's all fun till the tomato paste starts flying.

Follow-up to note that I fully appreciate the technical burdens that bot are causing. It is a huge problem and is forcing painful sysadmin decisions. But, this solution feels like it is making things worse.

I will also note that back in the days of corporate largess to academia (a.k.a., the 90s), plenty of academic DH centers/labs/initiatives/explorations used gifted hardware and software from companies looking to grab the loyalties of the young and the curious.

Is anyone else getting this bizarre error message if you spend too much time poking around the @nehgov.bsky.social web site? "Excessive crawling detected. We have blocked your request." I am stymied by this: I am not a bot. I am looking to access public information.

OMG, I listened to this as a tender young sprout, too! My fav was "Ladies First," which turned out to be wise words regarding the danger of privilege (maybe not when the tigers are debating whom to eat first?).

Any suggestions? I'm thinking of a box of shelf-stable things like protein bars, snacks, or dried fruit, as well as maybe calming stuff (Zen coloring books?). A staffer proposed a pillow fort, which I gotta say would work for me.

After not one but two shelter-in-place events this week (which came after a shooting at an area grocery store), I am now thinking about what sort of food & comfort items to stock in our offices. We have few windows and are behind a locked door, so it is a good place for students &c. in a crisis.

Just to be clear, the blurb implied that DeepSeek had no information but could talk about something else (we when asked about Tiananmen). It appeared that the AI gave the information and then removed the response. This did not happen when we asked it to describe the Unite the Right movement.

Sarah Wells @spw4s.bsky.social · 05/02/2025
Interesting postscript: I am in a meeting talking about AI, and we are looking at a live session of DeepSeek. We asked it, "Tell me about Carrie Lam," and it gave a long biography. However, after about 5 seconds, the response disappeared to be replaced by generic 'sorry, nothing to see here' blurb.

Holy guacamole! I had no idea school bands were allowed to vibe like this. That red-shirted flute is absolutely rocking out, and even the clarinets are looking kinda cool-adjacent. (Yeah, I messed around with clarinets as a kid. Yeah, they can sound cool, but you WILL look awkward.)

Reminder: They're trying to demoralize you, and they're doing a great job of it. Part of resisting is making time for joy despite the attempts to make you feel this is not the time for it. Love your people. Dig the art that speaks to you. Go to the places where life flows into you. You deserve joy.

Query: Anyone know where I can find additional information on photographer Freda Leinwand (1932-2012)? I am asking on behalf of one of my students who wants to write on her for a thesis. We know about materials at Harvard. We wondered if there were additional books or theses written on her.
