recommended by Sabina Knight
(Screenshot of the brightly coloured webpage from Knight's "Five Books" listicle.)

"With careful literary crafting, Taiwan's writers have told the complex story of their country since World War II. Sabina Knight, a professor at Smith College and author of *Chinese Literature: A Very Short Introduction*, recommends five of her favourite short story collections."

Interview by Sophie Roell, Editor.

The covers of Sabina's five recommended books appear at the bottom of the screenshot.

In the top right of the screenshot is the cover of Sabina's *Chinese Literature VSI*. The full title and author's name appear in larger black font below the image of the cover.

* #Chinese #Literature: A Very Short Introduction* 🀄📚 * The most accessible guide to Chinese literature available––compact but textured & far-reaching. * Serves as a window on Chinese culture from a philosophical, comparative approach. "a marvel of economy, substance, and style."
ALT for VSI:
Screenshot of an overview of Sabina Knight's book *Chinese Literature: A Very Short Introduction* from Oxford University Press.

The book cover appears on the left, with pink at the top, red in the middle, and green at the bottom.

On the right, under the title and phrase "Very Short Introductions", four bullet points suggest four of the book's virtues:

* The most accessible guide to Chinese literature available--compact but textured and far-reaching
* Serves as a window on Chinese culture from a philosophical, comparative approach
* Introduces Chinese literary theories
* Argues for the rise of literary modernity from as early as the eleventh century

I'd add: Authoritarianism doesn't always look like you think it does. The image is a public constantly straining under the chains of oppression, but it is very possible for the majority to enjoy comfortable, affluent lives while freedoms like speech are eroded, and others face blunter oppression.

Q: Why do I want my "suspended" X account back? A: Expressions of concern matter. My @SangBina #X account is my only way to reach many vulnerable #Chinese, #Uyghur, & #Tibetan individuals & orgs. I want to ask them how they are doing. I want to ask them what I can do to help.
Screenshot of X's "Account suspended" notification to Sabina Knight's X account. The Profile photos and bio are all gone. There's only a black background with a dark grey circle where the profile photo would be and a medium-shade grey band at the top.

The Chinese characters for Sabina Knight's Chinese name appear in white font before her name in English. Below is her handle: @SangBina , also in white (though somewhat small) font.

Below her name and handle are the words "Account suspended" in large white font. Below in smaller white font is the sentence "X suspends account which violate the X Rules." The "X Rules" is in bright blue font and is likely a clickable link to the rules.

Translated this now censored post by a queer Chinese netizen calling out their non-queer counterparts for whitewashing the #LGBTQ situation in #China in front Western #tiktokrefugees (see alt text) People outside China should see this scathing post too imo, so please share!
I'm really fed up with TikTok Refugees asking about the current situation of the LGBTQ in China, and then hundreds & thousands of cishet men & women rushing up to say "We don't care about sexual orientation", "We treat everyone equally", "no discrimination no promotion", "We're inclusive as long as you don't promote [LGBTQ ideology]."

Who says [we queer Chinese] belong to the same "we" as you guys?

If you really cared about the rights of sexual minorities, you wouldn’t say lightly such things as "Sexual minorities are not discriminated against here, we‘re all ordinary folks." Saying such words shows that the plight and suffering of sexual minorities are completely invisible to you. You think that "neither support or oppose" is a charity to minorities, and you even add "don’t [display your queerness] in public places" and "don't affect children." You‘re even proud of yourself for how tolerant you are. "We don't care", the world is now at peace [invoking Confucian term sarcastically].Yes, you don't care at all. You don’t care about the bullying sexual minority teenagers face at school; you don’t care about the difficulties transgender people face when job hunting; you don’t care about all those [LGBTQ] public welfare [social media] accounts that have been nuked; you don’t care about all those [LGBTQ] clubs that have been cancelled; you don’t care about all those [queer] characters on screen that have disappeared; you don’t care about the [queer-themed] books that have been removed from the shelves overnight; you don’t care about the rampant internet violence of [anti-LGBTQ] hate groups; you don’t care about the marginalization, fetishization, and stigmatization of sexual minorities; you don’t care about all the [queer] voices that have been silenced; and you don’t care at all about all the [queer] lives that have passed away. You are the principal who [temporarily] changes [his students' grueling] class schedule and greets his superiors with an [ingratiating] smile when they come to inspect [the school]; the domestic abuser who pretends to be affectionate [to his wife] in front of colleagues, relatives and friends; the "loving"[read: abusive] parents who put on another face when guests come over. All you care about is your mianzi [face].

“No discrimination no promotion” is a complete joke. I've seen how forcefully “no promotion” is enforced, but where is the enforcement of “no discrimination”? Cishets saying that LGBTQ people are already treated equally is like a man saying that we've long achieved gender equality, or an able-bodied person saying that people with disabilities already enjoy very convenient lives in China. Let the sexual minorities themselves determine whether or not they're discriminated against. You are a fish in the mainstream; you don't realize that you live in water. [yes, pun intended]
