Ok I’m back with more bc the baby’s asleep on me. This is more “modern stuff I suspect will haunt me,” less “I read this at 15 and it fucked me up” comma the thread. Some of which I’ve skeeted before, but sometimes a particular moment or image or line sticks in your head permanently.

absolute worst part about getting better at writing is still having stories left around from when your Process was worse, and then you have to go and fix that asshole's mistakes. "why didn't you think about this earlier," one wants to say. "why did you not simply have a better initial plan. why!!"

Plus for my sins I was really into Orson Scott Card as a like. Middle schooler, and one of his gave me a really specific phobia I only JUST conquered. There’s certainly more like this for me (and there are newer stories that I suspect I will think about as much), but I HAD to throw out some.

Private prisons are bad, but they’re a small part of the system. Mass incarceration is driven by public policy & spending — choices made by your elected officials.
Pie chart showing that less than 9% of confined people are held in private prisons: 13,000 held for local jail systems, 6,000 held for youth systems, 43,000 held of ICE & Office of Refugee Resettlement, 33,000 held for BoP & USMS, and 75,000 held for state prison systems.

I need to emphasize how close the memorial is to a school, one which (among other things) does a lot of early childhood education and early intervention programs for the district, just to make the picture a little bleaker.

"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.
