I administer our library’s discovery system and natural language searches just aren’t happening there. The interest in MCP servers or research assistants is looking to meet a need that doesn’t exist.

academic discovery tech is imo trying to solve the wrong problem. slapping an mcp layer over a discovery layer to perform agentic search is borne of a scarcity mindset and only serves to create the Undergraduate Term Paper Machine. maybe there's supposed to be friction when learning how to research!
