Fly, Caterpillar, Pear, and Centipede; from 1561. Mira calligraphiae monumenta, by Joris Hoefnagel & Georg Bocskay. Needed a little art this morning, since it's a grey cloudy day.
A page from an old book, with elaborate hand lettered type in Latin. I don't read Latin so no idea what it actually says. There is a beautiful image of a pear with a large black, yellow, and orange hornworm caterpillar on it; the stem has a grey butterfly perched on it. There is a centipede crawling below the pear, and a syrphid fly above.

My friend’s spouse fell off of a roof and broke his leg, so I helped set up and work her booth at an outdoor festival last weekend. The venue was a bit inland and the nor'easter didn’t come crashing down, but it was still terribly windy and rainy. The bright side? The community showed up!
Two people, dressed head-to-toe in rain gear, pulling a wagon with rainy day supplies. They handed out hot herbal tea to everyone volunteering and working the event. A field, surrounded by trees. Over 100 vendors.

I’m still here! Spent the summer shoveling loam and stone to regrade around our home and (hopefully) help keep this from happening as often. I’m so buff now 😅

Package from @angrygatodesigns.com arrived today! This was a kickstarter project for the Ask the Cats Oracle Deck. The deck is freaking amazing and exciting on its own, but the extras and the way it was all packed up just blew me into a flurry of bliss! Thank you, Lindsey!

Work in progress. A tiny pendant. There are two dots that mark where the bale will be attached. Those dots look like eyes, and the thick open circle backplate looks like a head with a huge round mouth.

Tonight I sat at at my jewelry station intending to work on a silver necklace project and not work with any stones. Instead I started working with this medusa quartz for a copper wall hanging piece 🤪
An almost eye-shaped free-form quartz cabochon with blue gilalite inclusions, “dry-fitted” into a copper setting. Same cabochon and copper setting, now with a hand holding the cab out of the way so that the inner bezel to hold the stone up is visible.

Favorite tool? Great springboard! I love this old cast iron hand vice 🖤
Vintage cast iron hand vice. Wing bolt. Spring action jaws. Found it on ebay years ago when I first started metalsmithing. I don’t use it as often as I used to because I have a couple other more specialized clamps and vices now. But I still really like it.

Leaves made with old roofing copper I scavenged from our local scrapyard #repostyourart #autumn #metalsmith
Three ovate or lanceolate shaped leaves created with 24 gauge copper sheet using a metalsmithing technique called fold forming. They have small rings on them where the stem would be.

It’s difficult to take close up photos of shiny metal and the stupid iphone camera software makes these look less tangible and overly processed.

But still, they’re pretty.

Working on a couple mixed-media projects and running a quick test of 3 of the most popular relief printing inks that can be cleaned up with soap and water: Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash Relief Ink, Schmincke Aqua Linoldruck Linoprint Ink, and Speedball Water Soluble Block Printing Ink.
Paper with 3 simple drawdowns. I wasn’t able to get the same color for each brand because so many are currently out of stock and on backorder, so I chose 3 random colors. All 3 were used straight from the tube, no extenders or retarders.

BLACK: Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash Relief Ink. Smooth silky feel and nice coverage.
BURNT SIENNA: Schmincke Aqua Linoldruck Linoprint Ink. Smooth. Quite nice.
LEAF GREEN: Speedball Water Soluble-Block Printing Ink. Sticky. Felt like acrylic paint.

The Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash is going to take 3+ days to dry, because despite being water-miscible, it contains oil. Once they’re dry, I’m going to experiment with over printing in various media.

Took a walk in the woods during my lunch break yesterday. These stones are the remains of a wall that was built a couple hundred years ago when this land was cleared for farming.
Early spring on a wooded path near an estuary in southern New Hampshire. The snow has melted to reveal a blanket of leaves fallen months ago. Very little sign of new life yet, but rains are expected over the next few days, and the woods will likely look much different next week. There is a very old stone wall trailing off of the path, between full-grown trees, extending into the distance. A fallen tree lays over a portion of the wall.

Wanted fresh epoxy for a kintsugi project, and was faced with adding $6 to my order or pay $8 in shipping, so I purchased this cheap agate burnisher. The bamboo handle was rough and covered in blobs of glue, but I fixed it up and think it’ll be quite useful #artstudio #artsupplies #metalsmith
Knife edge agate burnishing tool with bamboo handle. Not the best quality, but the stone itself is smooth and shaped well enough. I’ll use it for stone setting, gold leaf, and scoring cardstock. Maybe other things as well.

The stone cracked
Moss agate stone in a custom built sterling silver setting. When the prongs were pushed down, the stone cracked. This happens sometimes.

The stone has beautiful, wispy, natural inclusions that look like fog or smoke. Flowing.

While the stone cracking is a little bit upsetting and very unfortunate. I am choosing to go with the flow.

I will remove the stone, repair it using a kintsugi method, and will reset it. This may or may not work.

Almost finished
Work in progress. The photo shows the moss agate stone sitting alongside the finished setting and the chain. The stone will be placed in the setting and the prongs will be pushed into place. The next step requires a careful, firm but gentle touch, and patience.

Outside edge sawed and filed! Tomorrow, I’ll be adding a couple of prongs and a bale
Work in progress. Asymmetrical translucent moss agate cabochon, temporarily nestled inside a sterling silver frame. Shown balancing on the tips of my fingers. So afraid I was going to accidentally drop this while taking the photo. But I did not. Whew.

Sawing the backplate!
Work in progress. A sterling silver piece is being held onto a wooden bench pin with seriously strong fingers. I drilled a hole in the sheet metal (called ‘piercing’ by metalsmiths) so that I could thread a saw blade into the space. The saw blade is then mounted into a jewelers saw frame, similar to a coping saw. Both the interior and exterior of this backplate will be sawn along the lines drawn on with a black sharpy marker.

The frame has been soldered on to the backplate. Quite pleased with this seam!
Work in progress. Sterling silver. A previously fabricated frame for an asymmetrically shaped moss agate stone has been soldered onto a backplate. The join looks very nice. This was not my first attempt. Sometimes things go awry. Next up: sawing!

Work in progress, of a miniature carved bird. Carved in boxwood, with a walnut branch. #birdart #carving #woodcarving #woodworking #miniature #miniaturecarving #bird #sculpture #tiny #handmade #handcrafted
A very small carving of a small bird, similar to a sparrow, perched on a small branch. The bird is shown in three quarter profile, and is carved in a golden brown wood. A small black looks out. The claws are visible on the branch. The branch is a more chocolate colour, and goes across the shot. It is being held by a thumb and finger, with a grey background.

Rocky new england seacoast. Mid-february. Heavy snow blanketing the boulders on the shoreline. Dark icy blue water, waves breaking. A bright, sunny, relatively calm day. My relatively crappy camera lens has unintentionally given the ocean water an almost painterly effect.

These earrings are a collaboration between another artist and me. We’re donating one pair of each color to raise funds for The Trevor Project. We invite you to inquire in the comments or via DM. Thank you! #rainbow #pride #dragon #lgbtq #advocate #100sparks
The image shows 11 pair of chainmaille-inspired dragon scale earrings, one in each of the following colors: red, red-orange, orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue, purple, light grey, dark grey, and black.

The earrings are made with surgical stainless steel and anodized aluminum. Very lightweight. The focal element is shaped like an oval pointed on two sides, gently convex, with a subtle bend in the center, resembling something like a lanceolate leaf or (as we’re calling them) a dragon scale. The total length of the earring is 4 mm. The length of the scale is 22 mm.

For those of you who’ve been following along, these are Sparks 25-35 of 100.

Carefully bending rectangular wire around this dreamy stone
An asymmetrical moss agate stone, clear chalcedony with gorgeous white smokey blooms and wood-colored elements whose shape and texture resembles lichen. The inclusions are created by trapped minerals, often iron and manganese oxides. The outside diameter of the stone is being wrapped in a thick, rectangular, sterling silver wire. The wire is dark grey with oxidation because it has been annealed with a flame (heated to a dull red and then quenched in water) in order to make it temporarily less rigid.

A pair of earrings hanging on the edge of an earthy, hand-thrown ceramic mug filled with metalsmithing tools. The earrings are made with surgical stainless steel and anodized aluminum. Very lightweight. The focal element is shaped like an oval pointed on two sides, gently convex, with a subtle bend in the center, resembling something like a lanceolate leaf. We’re calling them dragon scales. The dragon scales in this pair are matte black. There are a total of 5 rings on each earring, 3 small rings connecting 2 larger ones. The surgical stainless steel is shiny. The contrast is quite nice. Overall, the earrings are understated but still a little bit edgy.
