Hematite glaze with 7% bone ash added. Got some tiny red crystals. I'll try putting this glaze through the community kiln to get a much slower cooling, but the titanium content might mean it won't ever work as an iron saturate glaze. #pottery

My partner does pottery. She’s experimenting with colour at the moment, which can be scary since she’s only really done black or white. Here’s a couple of her pieces in my paintings.

Executed by Kanō Tsunenobu (1636–1713)—a premier master of the Kobikichō branch of the Kanō school and official court painter (goyō eshi) to the Tokugawa shogunate—this hanging scroll exemplifies the peak of Edo-period ink painting.
Poised dynamically atop a jagged, moss-speckled rock above churning waves, a mythical kirin (qilin) turns its horned head in a posture of watchful grace. Rendered in expressive ink lineation (suibokuga), the auspicious beast features a single horn, a flame-like mane, cloven hooves, and a tail that spirals upward like a stylized storm cloud. Sweeping calligraphic brushstrokes outline the powerful contours of its body, transitioning from dense, jet-black ink along its back to delicate, feather-light lines across its underbelly. Below, rhythmic, curling line-work depicts foaming water surging against the crags. The composition invokes an evocative sensory atmosphere: the crisp scent of ground sumi ink on silk, the roaring spray of breaking waves, and the electric thrill of a divine creature descending through mountain mists.
Tsunenobu, nephew and disciple of the legendary Kanō Tan'yū, synthesized Chinese ink traditions with the refined visual elegance favored by the shogunal court. In East Asian mythology, the kirin is a benevolent, sacred creature that appears only during times of wise, virtuous rule and harmony. Tsunenobu’s signature and seal at the lower left mark the culmination of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and brush technique), where absolute control over ink saturation (sumi no gosei) transforms fluid movement into enduring divine form.

Japanese graffiti ,Shibuya, Tokyo
Painted directly onto a textured, off-white stucco exterior wall, this urban mural blurs the boundary between traditional decorative painting and contemporary street art. At its center, a painted vertical hanging scroll (kakejiku) rendered in ochre and earth tones displays a delicate study of crimson plum blossoms (koubai). In a clever trompe-l'œil illusion, gnarled plum branches burst outward beyond the scroll's visual borders, trailing pale pink blooms across the rough plaster. To the left, a modern outdoor water heater—bearing a swift, black marker tag—and exposed utility piping create a sharp, tactile contrast against the organic elegance of the painted flora. The scene evokes a distinct urban sensory atmosphere: the cool air of a Shibuya backstreet, the coarse grain of weathered stucco, and the quiet surprise of encountering seasonal beauty mounted beside industrial utility.
Situated within the alleyways of Shibuya, this piece exemplifies Tokyo's evolving street art landscape, where classical Japanese artistic motifs (kachō-ga, or flower-and-bird genre painting) are recontextualized on concrete and plaster. Traditionally, the kakejiku was displayed inside a home's tokonoma (display alcove) to mark seasonal transitions; here, the mural democratizes the alcove, bringing seasonal contemplation out into the public sphere. The plum blossom (ume) holds deep historical significance as the first flower to bloom amidst late-winter cold, symbolizing endurance, courage, and spiritual renewal.

The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. Last quarter, 20th century, Japan
This rinzu silk furisode represents a beautiful fusion of traditional Japanese textile artistry with the naturalistic aesthetic that has long characterized Japanese decorative arts. The kimono features an elegant composition of ume (plum blossom) branches gracefully cascading across the cream-colored damask ground, painted with the sophisticated yuzen resist-dyeing technique combined with pigment dyes. The artistic treatment evokes the classical Japanese painting tradition of kachō-ga (bird-and-flower painting), where natural subjects are rendered with both botanical accuracy and poetic sensibility.

The plum blossom motifs carry profound symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, representing resilience, hope, and the promise of spring, as plum trees are among the first to bloom despite harsh winter conditions. This symbolism makes them particularly appropriate for furisode, which are worn by young unmarried women during significant life celebrations. The flowing, organic arrangement of the branches demonstrates the Japanese aesthetic principle of asymmetrical balance, creating movement and vitality across the garment's surface. The damask background, with its subtle woven patterns of flowers and butterflies, adds textural depth while complementing the painted elements. The overall design reflects the continuing influence of the Rinpa school's stylized naturalism, updated for late 20th-century sensibilities while maintaining the essential elegance and symbolic richness of classical Japanese decorative arts.

The yabane motif carries profound symbolic significance in Japanese culture, representing protection from evil and the ability to move forward without looking back - themes that resonated powerfully during Japan's period of rapid modernization and military expansion in the 1930s.
This silk/rayon blend hitoe summer kimono presents a striking example of textile design that masterfully balances traditional Japanese motifs with the geometric sensibilities of international Art Deco and modernist movements. The bold checkerboard composition alternates between sections of deep teal horizontal stripes and dramatic black grounds populated with yabane (arrow feather) motifs rendered in vibrant coral red, pristine white, golden yellow, and emerald green. This systematic alternation creates a dynamic visual rhythm that transforms the kimono into a sophisticated study in pattern and counter-pattern, reflecting the period's fascination with industrial design principles and geometric abstraction while maintaining distinctly Japanese cultural references.

The yabane motif carries profound symbolic significance in Japanese culture, representing protection from evil and the ability to move forward without looking back - themes that resonated powerfully during Japan's period of rapid modernization and military expansion in the 1930s. The arrow feathers are depicted with a contemporary stylization that emphasizes their linear, almost aerodynamic qualities, enhanced by accents of supplementary silver metallic threads that add luminosity and movement to the design. The technical achievement of this piece lies in its complex weaving structure, where the lightweight hitoe construction suitable for summer wear accommodates multiple colors and metallic elements while maintaining the crisp definition necessary for such precise geometric patterning. The silk/rayon blend reflects the era's embrace of new synthetic materials, allowing for more affordable production while achieving the lustrous surface quality that makes both the stripes and arrow motifs appear to shimmer and shift as light moves across the fabric.
