In particular, I think folks are sleeping on the "AI psychosis" angle, the degree to which these are unsuitable for a business to use, and the way LLM tech undermines the information environment it depends on, but there are plenty of issues beyond those.

Thanks for taking on the tired idea that only deep users of LLMs are going to be equipped to evaluate them. As you say, the issues are much deeper than usefulness. Many of these issues rarely show up in the conversation. I took a stab at listing them in the post below, with more still to cover.

Bender takes apart the argument that only folks who use LLMs deeply -- advocates, in other words -- are knowledgeable enough to critique LLMs.

Counterpoint: they cannot do any of those things. They are programs which extrude text to complete a pattern. You might as well say a Markov chain bot is alive. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. You will need to come up with better than, "well, just look at it!"

In yet another stunning display of ICE cruelty, Oscar Belgal is still being held in solitary confinement (with a bullet still in his neck) at the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

This remains true: it is not an engineering discipline. It's just deploying shoddy systems in inappropriate contexts, ignorant of (or sometimes reveling in) the externalized harms. What would it take to start doing engineering? Construct validity, adversarial audits, robust governance, and more.
On the other hand, while the humanities and the sciences are essential as we go forward, we should also not pretend that we are talking about something other than an engineering effort of unprecedented scale and scope — society is aiming to build new kinds of artifacts. These artifacts should be built to work as claimed. We do not want to build systems that help us with medical treatments, transportation options and commercial opportunities to find out after the fact that these systems don’t really work — that they make errors that take their toll in terms of human lives and happiness. In this regard, as I have emphasized, there is an engineering discipline yet to emerge for the data-focused and learning-focused fields. As exciting as these latter fields appear to be, they cannot yet be viewed as constituting an engineering discipline.

"It's already here, what do you mean you think you can refuse?" is just another variation of the agency-stealing inevitability narrative. The future is not yet written, and we can shape it, starting with rejecting inevitability and claiming our agency. /fin

Time for my monthly soapbox. Ahem. 🗣️ MAKING FUN OF THE BODIES AND UNALTERABLE PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES OF PEOPLE YOU DISAGREE WITH IS SOFT PHYSIOGNOMY. INTERNAL MORAL CHARACTER IS NOT VISIBLE IN THE BODY. ENGAGING IN THIS FOR 'GOOD' REASONS HAS THE SAME EFFECT AS ENGAGING IN IT FOR 'BAD' REASONS.

I'm glad this is bankrupt. I hope it goes away entirely. Encouraging relationships with LLMs is really bad stuff, potentially leading to detachment from reality, separation from community and susceptibility to manipulation by the LLM host.

What Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd was a public extrajudicial execution. Keep that in mind when you say we haven't had a public execution since 1936. We have, actually. Many times. They're called police murders.

In my mind the defining feature of Trump II is that is ✨actually✨ a kakistocracy. RFK Jr and Russ Vought have very little in common politically, but they do share one essential quality: they are absolutely the worst person alive for the jobs they have.

I think you're giving too much credit here. More plausible to my view is that they understand empathy as something others see as sympathetic. They then invent subjects of empathy to manipulate others into becoming more sympathetic. Shorter: they are lying.

The EA folks are opportunistic about this, as opposed to the many folks you point out are becoming increasingly out of touch reality -- and that latter group is increasingly large and slowly cooking. Thread on that linked.

The exciting thing about empathy for imaginary entities is that you get to decide what their needs are and how deeply you will hypothetically satisfy them. Real people are annoyingly complex and have actual needs that can take work to fulfill. Real people call you on your shit.

I'm pretty confident that the "AI psychosis" problem is much, much bigger than people understand, with a whole spectrum of folks getting more and more detached from reality in slow motion. The acute cases were identified within the first couple years, but we'll see many more over a longer span.

One of the most frustrating things about politics over the last 25+years is watching many people just not understand that people lie. That liars lie. That the words of liars cannot be trusted. Everyone is Charlie Brown as Lucy holds a football. Not just the public. Everyone.

Even setting aside the ethical and aesthetic considerations, these logos are likely not ownable, and likely could be used by anyone else for any reason. For example, you could likely use their logo on a fake version of their site. Here's a part of one of my LLM issues threads talking about it.

But the reason cars are easier and faster is not because cars are INHERENTLY easier and faster as a form of transportation. It is because we have built this place for cars. We can unbuild it, and step ONE in unbuilding it is imagining hard infrastructure that you can build around.

The thing we need--that we know we need!--and that is EXTREMELY POPULAR, whenever it is built! is a model where people can walk to grocery stores, restaurants, parks, and schools where they live, and get to work without using their own individual car.
