“New Zoo Revue,” but the characters start to exhibit the behaviors of the animals. Charlie the owl eats Freddie Frog, and Henrietta Hippo mauls Doug, Emma Jo, and Mr. Dingle for getting too close to her territory.

Walking around the neighborhood, I admire a neighbor’s yard that is filled with hibiscus flowers, each a different color: pink, red, yellow. Me? I don’t have room for that many, so I just have this one, which is all the colors.
A hibiscus bloom: blood-red in the center, pink around that, fire-engine red past that, bleeding into yellow tips so that the transitions looks almost orange.

it is something i hit on a lot, that of the many, many bad reasons all the internet regulation stuff is aimed at kids instead of actual companies, CEOs, the ones actually doing harm - is it's cuz kids don't have any political power and can't do shit about it. they're a 'no cost' target here.

Do they (and the producers!) not know that the noun is ‘San Francisco Bay’ because they’re outsiders who’ve never spent any time here, or because it’s (both performer and producer) a machine that is mimicking human speech without cognition or intelligence of any kind?

I’m continually amused by the pasttime “Is that AI, or just a stranger?” where you wonder why basic things are mispronounced in commercial advertisements. Today it’s someone talking about job prospects in “the San Francisco BAY area,” like there’s other, alternative San Francisco areas.

The silliness is in the characters’ reactions to the central revelation of the film: ALL the characters immediately jump to a nonsensical religious experience of awe, reverence, and/or worship. There’s no presentation of any other reactions, which rings false with what we are presented in the film.

The script is both REALLY well-crafted & a little silly at the same time. It’s a bit like an alternative take on “Escape to Witch Mountain,” with *such* deft in media res writing. Spielberg makes it feel effortless, but the longer I think about it, the more impressed with the story structure I am!

Just watched “Disclosure Day:” it’s classic Spielberg, with tight action sequences, endearing character moments, and outstanding performances! The CGI hurts it, though, and detracts from the ending, to the point where initial reactions were negative, despite my family’s enjoying all but the end.

Meanwhile, the soulknife’s player has been told the serpent is a beast, but he STILL wastes a psionic die and a turn trying to MENTALLY INTIMIDATE the animal via Psychic Whispers. This fails, because it doesn’t/can’t understand language.

The barbaruid’s player - who knows that each bite delivers 4d12+7 damage, which could do enough damage to instantly kill his PC - STILL does not have his character try to escape…for TWO ROUNDS!!! His attacks miss for two rounds (he survives the first through Rage/ extreme luck, leaving him at 3 HP).

Spaceseeker19 @spaceseeker19.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
Everyone else also attacked (except for the soulknife, who climbed onto the sea serpent and clung to its back). They did a bunch of damage, and the sea serpent retreated back into the ocean. Victory! …except the barbaruid is still in its mouth and the soulknife on its back, so they go with it.

Spaceseeker19 @spaceseeker19.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
The barbaruid went into Rage, but instead of using the ADV that gave him to escape, he used it to *attack,* which is about the only thing he could choose that doesn’t have ADV, instead just adding 2 to damage…IF he hits! What’s worse, the attacks he makes are with DISADV because he’s Restrained!

Spaceseeker19 @spaceseeker19.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
Example: a sea serpent has appeared (uses the stats of a tyrannosaur, but it can swim 40’). It randomly picked a target (the barbaruid) and bit him, which Grappled/Restrained him and took 3/5ths of his HP. Nobody - not even the barbaruid himself! - made an attempt to free the PC from the grapple!

Despite my frequent reminders to USE these many mechanical benefits, the players just don’t. It says something about humanity that players consistently ignore benefits they’re given while simultaneously making bad choices and doubling down on them rather than learning to make better choices.

There are 6 PCs in the party: a sorceradin, a barbaruid, a soulknife rogue, an artificer, a druid, and a fighter. In addition to the Legacy Card abilities, the dragon orb abilities, and Inspiration, I’ve implemented Achievements that the players/PCs can unlock for single-use special abilities.

I *fully* have the bug now, however. When my daughter isn’t available, I’m struggling to not start a single-player game of BG. I DID install Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, but so far I haven’t touched it. Instead, I’m writing about all of it here.

But coordinating three people’s schedules is harder than it is for two, so we have had multiple times in the last few days where it’s just my daughter and I. So we started a separate game of BG, playing through the Black Pits scenario!

Some time in the intervening years, there was a sale for the Enhanced Editions of the Infinity engine games, and I bought BG again. A few days ago, our schedules aligned, and I started a 3P campaign with my now-adult kids in BG:EE. Daughter & I love revisiting it, and my son is loving his 1st time.

Then an error happened, corrupting our save. We said we’d try going back to an earlier save to continue, but were dispirited enough that we set BG aside for a while. By the time we finally returned to the game after a year, a Windows update had changed compatibility, making it completely unplayable.

Probably ten years ago, I bought BG on good old games so that I could install it more easily. I did, but didn’t really have time to play it, as my kids were old enough that I was teaching them actual tabletop role-playing games. The podcast followed.

A thread about BG and me In the 90s I played a bit of Baldur’s Gate, really enjoyed it, then got distracted by other games. In 2001 or 2002, I bought a copy of BG to play during a business trip; I got a bit further before the trip ended.

A deckbuilder is a type of tabletop game where players start with identical decks of cards, and each player modifies their deck during the course of the game, BUILDING it through PLAY. “Deckbuilder” can also include video games that emulate this kind of gameplay.
