My NSF proposal, which would have funded six undergraduate researchers over three summers, was one of the ones rejected. I got my start in science thanks to NSF funding. I feel awful for all the science-loving college students who don't have the same chances I had to try research.

Someone help me out. What was the motivation for starting the journal "Planetary Research", given the existence of "The Planetary Science Journal"? Why should I submit my papers to "Planetary Research"? Genuinely confused.

Hundreds of bright streaks cross the sky in different directions, as if scratching the background natural sky behind it. The bottom of the image is occupied by the dark silhouette of a mountainous desert landscape. Atop the mountain at the centre, is a small, distant metallic dome and yellow-orange lasers shine behind it.

[1/2] It was a combination of things. After 10 years I felt like the format was getting a little stale, and frankly given the situation in American science I didn't feel right asking for an hour of people's time to chat as if nothing was going on. Guests now find the new format more joyful...

Or, integration with ORCID, instead of field-specific member databases. My students are just learning what they are interested in. They may never get an AAS membership but an early ORCID would help them with their eventual Ph.D. in whale-call signal processing (a real example!)

One super helpful option would be an option to click once to assign an institution of a co-author, so I'm not entering my institution's address seven times.

My small plea to journal editors and conference organizers: stop making it so tedious to include undergraduate co-authors on papers and talks. They aren't in the database yet because this is the first research they've ever done! So much clicking and copy-pasting. #🔭 #🧪

We were considering preventable causes of death; so for our purposes rabies was preventable both because you can avoid rabid animals and also because treatment is, generally available. So it made sense for us to consider treatment as part of the whole outcome.

Great question! We framed this as rabies exposure; but considered the impact of treatment. It's true, that if you're untreated you're highly likely to die. But for the data we looked at, almost everyone got the rabies treatment in time and it worked for almost everyone.

Want to use this for a lecture? Different aspect ratios available at www.crnugent.com! This is the result of a skill exchange; I provided technical feedback for a (very cool!) book James is working on in exchange for these graphics.
A wide-aspect ratio of the figure described in the previous post, with the axes adjusted and main text moved to the left.

Every day people ask me - are you more likely to be attacked by an elephant or to witness a large asteroid hitting the Earth? We did the math! Thanks James Round (www.jamesrounddesign.com) for making social media and lecture-friendly versions of Figure 1 of Nugent et al. 2025!
A graphic version of a scientific figure shows on the x-axis that the chance of a 140-m asteroid hitting the earth is more likely than the chance of an individual experiencing a sand hole collapse, a coyote attack, an elephant attack, a lightning strike, or a skydiving accident. It is less likely than carbon monoxide poisoning, a car accident, influenza, or rabies. The y-axis shows the chance of fatality if the event occurs. Although an asteroid impact can cause a wide range of fatalities (0 to billions) the other events are shown from more chance of fatality (sand hole collapse, elephant attack, lightning strike, carbon monoxide poisoning) to less likely (coyote attack, influenza, rabies).
