one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Meta has always been one of the worst I suppose but even they used to back off from their worst excesses and now they're responding to any criticism of their "pervert glasses" with "it has a light". They've made the most philosophically load-bearing LEDs in history lmao

just reminded of this thing Meredith Whittaker said a few years ago and thought I'd add since it seems relevant; I think a lot of people now understand this about the tech industry and view it a lot more cynically, and industry has responded by basically going mask-off. or closer to that, at least.
Politico:
What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

Whittaker:
I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.
Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.
It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

this is true. semi related I used to think colman domingo dressed incredibly well for a straight guy. should've been less surprised finding out he's gay lol

I mean he kind of did and didn't. Even if things are good in the scheme of history, it's not like the world has a shortage of problems to struggle against; plenty of just causes to struggle for. Struggling for fake bigoted causes isn't just struggle for struggle's sake; it's a choice.

not a specific line of code but I like to put silly jokes in my code. like "container" can be reasonably shortened to "cont" for a variable name which is very close to "cunt" and I am a child lmao. and you know I'm shortening "analytics" to "anal"

I'm not sure it's much. And I mean, AI companies still maintain a veneer of goodness. I think the triple-punch of general enshittification, people realising social media sucks, and the whole industry going into crypto and that blowing up, basically tanked any goodwill and credibility they had.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

yeah this is how I've been thinking about it. a basic attempt at safety would involve trying to only deliver the useful thing to end users, so the danger is contained; like a nuclear power plant delivers electricity. AI companies are like "but what if we shipped fissile material to your house?"

also on the subject of jesse eisenberg, everyone should go see A Real Pain, which he wrote/directed/stars in and kieran culkin won an oscar for. it's very good.

everyone saying "it should be called now you 3 me" is correct, but they blew the chance to call the second one "now you don't" so had to with this one as it might've been the last. I won't call it the biggest instance of mismanagement in hollywood history, but it could be close. total debacle tbqhwy

Kinda fucked up that “Star Wars Zero Company” doesn’t have a colon but “Star Wars: Galactic Racer” does. I won’t even get into “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order”

a big part of it of course is that it'd be uncomfortable for people in power to reckon with, but the scandal also touches on deep cultural stuff for everyone. like you can't really separate it from the fact that female beauty standards are pretty youth-obsessed.

I have friends younger than 38 who look like this and they're wonderful people, and some of the worst people I know are conventionally attractive. Being hateful and misogynistic or kind and compassionate is who you are inside, not what you look like.

well, sort of. the specific risk proposed by the hype men is hype, but bad actors abusing it and idiots over-relying on it because they fell hook line and sinker for the marketing is a huge problem. the solution - regulating it into the ground - is the same either way though I suppose.

I guess the idea is it's nice to have your workspace centred, but especially if you have a decent sized screen (or a comically large one like me) moving your mouse back and forth just gets so annoying. Especially as in Unity/Godot you often have to drag stuff from the hierarchy to the attributes.

Sophky.. Spoophie? This isn't working. @sophies.games · 28/09/2026
Like, the most common thing you'll want to do after clicking on an object is to edit it. Surely you'd want to make that as easy as possible. Anyway, Godot and Unity are also guilty of it, but at least in those you can edit the layout.
A screenshot of Godot with a custom layout applied, such that the object hierarchy and attribute editor are both on the left.

Something that drives me fully bananas is that every piece of software that has an object hierarchy puts the hierarchy on the left, and the attributes on the right! So most of the time after clicking on an object, you have to drag your cursor across your *whole screen* to edit it. Bananas!
A screenshot of Figma, with the object hierarchy on the left and attribute editor on the right.

i've had so many of these working on imsims. my first was the guards in my stealth game who could hear each other's footsteps and if they didn't already know roughly where the other guy was they would investigate each other and be surprised to see each other. in first person this looks like nothing

yeah I used to use it and it's less the language itself and more the engine just doesn't provide very useful abstractions or ways to make your own, but it is easier to get to grips with which is why it has so much purchase with devs who don't come from a programming background
