Today was sadly my only Hurlstone Point cetacean survey this year. Met a walking group of teachers from the town (and school) where I grew up (NE Hampshire). After a VERY quiet survey, 2 harbour porpoises turned up 3 mins before the survey end! Hooray! 💚💙 #Somerset #wildlife #nature

Happy U2 Day! 50 years of my favourite band! 1993, Wembley Stadium, I was down-in-front (B stage) and was given Larry's drumstick! I am waving Larry's drum stick about, drinking Guinness and having a little #U2 party tonight!

Spent a wonderful night in a little hut in #Dorset on Friday, right on the edge of the heathland. Amazingly bold fallow deer popped over to try and eat our dinner. Next morning, woke up to the churring of nightjars! That certainly gave me a warmed cockles feeling! 💚 #nature #wildlife

I cannot see a dead fish as a "conservation success". Bluefin tuna are still rare - they only avoid being technically endangered cos they stabilised at a tiny number. That's not a healthy population, just a stable one. Let them breed and really do well before you fish for them if you have to.

An awesome eclipse: I had 50 eclipse glasses from #GoStargazing, gave some to family/friends, offered the rest on the village FB page & said I'd be up the beacon field if anyone wanted to join me. 50+ people turned up! I met, chatted and shared it with so many lovely people I didn't know before!

If you don't have proper eclipse glasses / filters, try a pinhole camera ... When the sun is whole, images will be circles. When partially eclipsed they will be crescents. You can use a colander or even a Ritz Biscuit. Find out more in my book "Up - a scientist's guide to the magic above us"
Ritz biscuit held above a red book. Crescents can be seen in the shadow as the holes work as a pinhole camera.
