I assume everyone is out watching Digger. I've already said it is the allegory of David Ellison's acquisition of Warner Bros. But it is also a two-hour showcase of Tom Cruise's career-spanning, trademark setpiece: rolling calls. Here's how I put it in 2015:

Connor, The Studios after the Studios
Rain Man opens with the arrival of four Lamborghinis and Tom Cruise’s at-
tempts to get them sold. The cars have not been approved by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), his swing loans are coming due, and the buyers are
getting cold feet, so he bluffs his way through several phone calls. Along the
way, he tells his banker the check is in the mail, he suggests bribing the EPA
inspector, and he knocks five thousand dollars off the price of two of the cars
to keep the buyers happy. Fires doused, he asks his girlfriend, “Ready for Palm
Springs?” When she is incredulous that he would leave before the deals are actu-
ally settled, he is ultraconfident: “We’re seconds away from closing this deal and
clearing seventy-five grand. Not bad for a couple of phone calls, huh?”
If actors can have stock scenes, then this is Tom Cruise’s. His trademark
set piece consists of him rolling calls, often in a headset. Narratively, it is a dia-
logue, but experientially, it is a monologue. Such scenes allow him to use his
body against his voice. Because he is an acousmatic figure for the person on the
other end of the phone, he can tip us to moments when he is lying or secretly
overjoyed or hiding his true feelings. The phone, like the suit, puts the body in
evidence.
