Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

as i said long ago, my bandcamp is starting to reflect the eclecticism i cherish, with some arrhythmic noise, a handful of charming video game music, and of course 15+ hours of out-of-tune Satie. if you listen to and support my music then i'll make more of it, so be careful carriez.bandcamp.com

the 21st-century US "left" loves nothing more than an opportunity to insult women/ethnic minorities/fat people/homosexuals/whatever in a way that makes them feel like righteous crusaders rather than feeling the unexamined guilt that was what caused them to "join" the "left" in the first place

i ihate to post about ‘politics’ but at this point everyone agrees that the only reason Joanna Newsom’s 5th album isn’t out yet is becuase Gavin’s pressuring the recrod label to stop his weird cousine from being in the news & making him look worse by contrast (he cannot name a single bird), right?

(the flaw here is that the beehive thing is actually a relevant metaphor to the story, rather than a total digression that he's indulging in just because he wants to tell you about bees, so it puts Tolstoy in the firmament of literature but not shining above it like Melville)
010
carrie z @somebypaths.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
then, Book 11 Chapter 20 is simply a long and detailed description of bee behavior. a digression into unnecessarily thorough scientific observation, interrupting plot events? yes! this is what literature is all about!! long live Tolstoy!!! (spoilers for bk. 11 ch. 20, & disturbing bee imagery)
The bees circle round a queenless hive in the hot beams of the midday sun as gaily as around the living hives; from a distance it smells of honey like the others, and bees fly in and out in the same way. But one has only to observe that hive to realize that there is no longer any life in it. [...] To the beekeeper’s tap on the wall of the sick hive, instead of the former instant unanimous humming of tens of thousands of bees with their abdomens threateningly compressed, and producing by the rapid vibration of their wings an aerial living sound, the only reply is a disconnected buzzing from different parts of the deserted hive. From the alighting board, instead of the former spirituous fragrant smell of honey and venom, and the warm whiffs of crowded life, comes an odor of emptiness and decay mingling with the smell of honey. There are no longer sentinels sounding the alarm with their abdomens raised, and ready to die in defense of the hive. There is no longer the measured quiet sound of throbbing activity, like the sound of boiling water, but diverse discordant sounds of disorder. In and out of the hive long black robber bees smeared with honey fly timidly and shiftily. They do not sting, but crawl away from danger. Formerly only bees laden with honey flew into the hive, and they flew out empty; now they fly out laden. The beekeeper opens the lower part of the hive and peers in. Instead of black, glossy bees—tamed by toil, clinging to one another’s legs and drawing out the wax, with a ceaseless hum of labor—that used to hang in long clusters down to the floor of the hive, drowsy shriveled bees crawl about separately in various directions on the floor and walls of the hive. Instead of a neatly glued floor, swept by the bees with the fanning of their wings, there is a floor littered with bits of wax, excrement, dying bees scarcely moving their legs, and dead ones that have not been cleared away.

the recent Oppenheimer movie was incompetent nonsense but i liked how it ended by saying basically "as long as there is even the possibility of nuclear war, humanity is ruined"; a mass audience saw that, and for a moment that gave me some hope that, like, anyone would care about disarmament ever

all the stuff in "[DELISTED] I Found Evidence Of My House Spinning | U&U Forums (LibreCrawl archive 2026-09-03)" really does happen round here. ok, maybe <vg qbrfa'g srry yvxr rnfgunzcgba fcrpvsvpnyyl>, but i was grateful for a bit of inverisimilitude in an otherwise pretty intensely realistic story

Satie sample in "Near or Far" on the new Carly Rae Jepsen, and she actually seems to understand that the special Satie thing is less "soft gentle unintrusive" than "non-functional tonal harmony", which is pretty cool! good track. some fun chord progressions elsewhere on the album too. thanks Canada

have you or ur kid heard the original radio series? hearing that (thanks to my parents) around age 12 was maybe the single biggest media influence on my developing brain - the complex sentence structures delivered calmly, DNA's love of the bizarre sounds that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop could do

it helped that the bewildering machines you would stand in front of had all sorts of moving parts and inexplicable lights and switches. nowadays even if you wear the skinny tie and glasses, the only thing you can stand in front of is some kind of little rectangle

update: memorizing remained fun & soothing. in absence of any other sort of performance chance, i decided to record the piece yesterday to mark 3 weeks since i started learning it. (spent a lot more time failing to fix a color grading problem than on the recording itself, c'est la vie.) it was fun!

what the "bleyzes" could this next project be…
mysterious screenshot of my computer desktop with visible a window of typeset sheet music and a window of hand-written sheet music. the words "hydro" and "dredging the lake" and "then i", etc. but it's not my handwriting? by the way my desktop background is currently Irene Rice Pereira - Evaporating Night (1951). carrie lore for true fans: each day my desktop background cycles to a new painting from a big folder of abstract paintings. also the file of my fave ilya repin painting is visible in the corner. also idk if "bleyzes" has some kind of other meaning, but here it's just meant as a reference to Carla Bley. thanks for reading

i reached the Battle of Borodino and i’m trying to understand the map layout (it’s complex and confusing and no one could possibly understand it (which, to be fair, is Tolstoy’s whole point about war)). anyway i used the Street View to look around the area in modern times & there was a fun surprise
The United States Military Academy Department of History’s map of the opening positions of the Battle of Borodino, 1812. It’s way too difficult to understand, even with a bird’s eye view and retrospect, so I can hardly blame Pierre Bezúkhov for not knowing what’s going on in the slightest when he’s there on the ground in Book 10, Chapter 21. But I can blame him for getting involved in this battle in the first place, what on earth are you thinking Pierre? Also there’s a commander named “Grouchy” on this map which is funny.Google Street view of Shevardino in 2012. An ordinary, boring modern street with cars and overhead power lines……but in the distance there’s a group of military cosplayers wearing full uniforms and riding horses!

i looked up a Brazilian movie trailer: i wanted to relax by seeing a bit of an unfamiliar culture, feeling part of a shared global humanity, & maybe learning a few words of Portuguese; instead 2 seconds of "auto-dub" left me crushed by doubt in shared reality & a sense of total cultural atomization
