then, Book 11 Chapter 20 is simply a long and detailed description of bee behavior. a digression into unnecessarily thorough scientific observation, interrupting plot events? yes! this is what literature is all about!! long live Tolstoy!!! (spoilers for bk. 11 ch. 20, & disturbing bee imagery)
The bees circle round a queenless hive in the hot beams of the midday sun as gaily as around the living hives; from a distance it smells of honey like the others, and bees fly in and out in the same way. But one has only to observe that hive to realize that there is no longer any life in it. [...] To the beekeeper’s tap on the wall of the sick hive, instead of the former instant unanimous humming of tens of thousands of bees with their abdomens threateningly compressed, and producing by the rapid vibration of their wings an aerial living sound, the only reply is a disconnected buzzing from different parts of the deserted hive. From the alighting board, instead of the former spirituous fragrant smell of honey and venom, and the warm whiffs of crowded life, comes an odor of emptiness and decay mingling with the smell of honey. There are no longer sentinels sounding the alarm with their abdomens raised, and ready to die in defense of the hive. There is no longer the measured quiet sound of throbbing activity, like the sound of boiling water, but diverse discordant sounds of disorder. In and out of the hive long black robber bees smeared with honey fly timidly and shiftily. They do not sting, but crawl away from danger. Formerly only bees laden with honey flew into the hive, and they flew out empty; now they fly out laden. The beekeeper opens the lower part of the hive and peers in. Instead of black, glossy bees—tamed by toil, clinging to one another’s legs and drawing out the wax, with a ceaseless hum of labor—that used to hang in long clusters down to the floor of the hive, drowsy shriveled bees crawl about separately in various directions on the floor and walls of the hive. Instead of a neatly glued floor, swept by the bees with the fanning of their wings, there is a floor littered with bits of wax, excrement, dying bees scarcely moving their legs, and dead ones that have not been cleared away.

what the "bleyzes" could this next project be…
mysterious screenshot of my computer desktop with visible a window of typeset sheet music and a window of hand-written sheet music. the words "hydro" and "dredging the lake" and "then i", etc. but it's not my handwriting? by the way my desktop background is currently Irene Rice Pereira - Evaporating Night (1951). carrie lore for true fans: each day my desktop background cycles to a new painting from a big folder of abstract paintings. also the file of my fave ilya repin painting is visible in the corner. also idk if "bleyzes" has some kind of other meaning, but here it's just meant as a reference to Carla Bley. thanks for reading

i reached the Battle of Borodino and i’m trying to understand the map layout (it’s complex and confusing and no one could possibly understand it (which, to be fair, is Tolstoy’s whole point about war)). anyway i used the Street View to look around the area in modern times & there was a fun surprise
The United States Military Academy Department of History’s map of the opening positions of the Battle of Borodino, 1812. It’s way too difficult to understand, even with a bird’s eye view and retrospect, so I can hardly blame Pierre Bezúkhov for not knowing what’s going on in the slightest when he’s there on the ground in Book 10, Chapter 21. But I can blame him for getting involved in this battle in the first place, what on earth are you thinking Pierre? Also there’s a commander named “Grouchy” on this map which is funny.Google Street view of Shevardino in 2012. An ordinary, boring modern street with cars and overhead power lines……but in the distance there’s a group of military cosplayers wearing full uniforms and riding horses!

saw a public piano in a park, and on a whim i decided to return in the middle of the night and record some Satie, so after i do some editing and stuff, Satie Complete Piano Works Volume 13 will probably arrive later this month! it’s going to be a good one i think
the provisional album art for Satie 13, which is a photo of me at said park piano at like 1 AM, with a streetlight in the background (and a banner that says "Newton" revealing that this instalment was made in the great town of Newton from which presumably Isaac Newton hails). (actually it's a screenshot of the Mac OS X default image editing software while i work on that image. that's the same social-media indulgence that i did last year in my post about installmment 12, because it was so universally well-received last time.)

i played the computer game "868-BACK" over the weekend and somehow got a score that achieved 48th on the "leaderboard", which is the first and probably only time i'll ever appear on a leaderboard of any kind!
The "868-BACK" leaderboard, with me ("hummingbird"), at position 48, with a score of 1436. According to Wikipedia, 1436 is the year Gutenberg began work on the printing press, though we know little of how his work progressed until 1450 when the press was in operation. It's also the death year of Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, a central figure in Holland's Hook and Cod Wars.

i was expecting some homosexual subtext in “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, because that’s just what happens in classic literature, but i'm halfway thru and was really not expecting it to have multiple background transgender people and a t4t romance??? (spoilers for book 5:chapter 13, & 7:4, & 7:11)
Book 5, Chapter 13
“Ah, and Ivánushka is here too!” said Prince Andrew, glancing with a smile at the young pilgrim.
“Andrew!” said Princess Mary, imploringly.
“Il faut que vous sachiez que c’est une femme,” * said Prince Andrew to Pierre.
“Andrew, au nom de Dieu!” *(2) Princess Mary repeated.
* “You must know that this is a woman.”
* (2) “For heaven’s sake.” Book 7, Chapter 4
A third person rode up circumspectly through the wood (it was plain that he had had a lesson) and stopped behind the count. This person was a gray-bearded old man in a woman’s cloak, with a tall peaked cap on his head. He was the buffoon, who went by a woman’s name, Nastásya Ivánovna.
“Well, Nastásya Ivánovna!” whispered the count, winking at him. “If you scare away the beast, Daniel’ll give it you!”
“I know a thing or two myself!” said Nastásya Ivánovna. Book 7, Chapter 11
Whether they were playing the ring and string game or the ruble game or talking as now, Nicholas did not leave Sónya’s side, and gazed at her with quite new eyes. It seemed to him that it was only today, thanks to that burnt-cork mustache, that he had fully learned to know her. And really, that evening, Sónya was brighter, more animated, and prettier than Nicholas had ever seen her before.
“So that’s what she is like; what a fool I have been!” he thought gazing at her sparkling eyes, and under the mustache a happy rapturous smile dimpled her cheeks, a smile he had never seen before.
“I’m not afraid of anything,” said Sónya. “May I go at once?” She got up.Book 7, Chapter 11
Sónya came along, wrapped in her cloak. She was only a couple of paces away when she saw him, and to her too he was not the Nicholas she had known and always slightly feared. He was in a woman’s dress, with tousled hair and a happy smile new to Sónya. She ran rapidly toward him.
“Quite different and yet the same,” thought Nicholas, looking at her face all lit up by the moonlight. He slipped his arms under the cloak that covered her head, embraced her, pressed her to him, and kissed her on the lips that wore a mustache and had a smell of burnt cork. Sónya kissed him full on the lips, and disengaging her little hands pressed them to his cheeks.

act now and download and/or listen to “Puzzles of 2025”: the best-selling album of the 1920s AND of the 2020s!
a screenshot of the Bandcamp Discover page for the tag '1920s', proving that this album is the best-selling album from that decade. Okay I admit that i took this screenshot last week. At time of writing, Glenn Crytzer is outdoing us. Fair enough. It looks like he's more committed to the 1920s than we are.a screenshot of the Bandcamp Discover page for the tag '2020s', proving that this album is the best-selling album from that decade. I took this one today; even after the initial hype has died down, we're still universally acclaimed as the best album of the decade.

(oh, as i did not include "alt text" for the video above, i've copied the text of the video to the "alt text" for this image (one of the Elsie Janis photos in the video (White Studio, 1925, from the NYPL)))
Video text:

In 1925, at the height of The Cross-Word Mania, the renowned vaudeville performer and songwriter Elsie Janis (“The Sweetheart of the A.E.F.”; “The Regular Girl”) presented her new revue: “Puzzles of 1925”.

A smash hit at the time, drawing crowds across the country, this cross-word-themed revue would quickly be forgotten: a mere footnote in the life of a woman who is herself a footnote in the history of musical theatre which is itself a footnote in the great story of Mankind.

There in the dust-bin of history: there “Puzzles of 1925” has remained
for 100 years! and there it shall remain even after…

carrie z and Hedra Rowan proudly present:

“Puzzles of 2025”
A new revue for a new century!!
(in auditory format)
Forty songs!!
(including the surviving songs from that forgotten revue of yestercentury)
Hidden secrets!!
(a puzzle in the background both unfair and unreasonable)
Amidst a foul year, a fair breeze of frivolity!!
(or so it has been to us)

“Puzzles of 2025”! by carrie z and Hedra Rowan. To be released, if all goes well, before the year is out.

(Also this image is of Elsie in the play, wearing a crossword-puzzle dress and standing next to Jimmy Hussey.)

The album art for "Erik Satie: Complete Piano Works - Volume 12" by Carrie Z. It's the famous Ramón Casas portrait of Satie in the Chicago Art Institute. But I did a poor job taking a photo of it.
It's shown here in image editing software and this post is being planned out in a text document in the corner of the screenshot. I admit that I find it mildly amusing to do this sort of thing.
