When workers earn a living wage, they can lead a life free from constant struggle. The increase in purchasing power boosts business revenues, enabling companies to expand and hire more people to participate in the economy. This creates a positive cycle of growth that raises living standards for all.

Working people deserve a living wage.

When workers earn more, they spend more. Business revenues increase, allowing them to expand and hire additional workers. More people are able to enter the workforce and earn money, further increasing the aggregate demand for goods and services in the economy. Both workers and businesses benefit through this positive cycle of economic and job growth. As workers have greater purchasing power, they are able to buy more and healthier goods, supporting a more healthy society that is less reliant on the healthcare system. This frees up resources for doctors and hospitals to treat people more efficiently, further contributing to a healthy population.

Contrast this with an economy of workers that earn poverty and slave wages. More of the wealth is funneled to the already rich, who tend to save a greater proportion of their income than those who are poor. Less money is circulating between disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, decreasing their purchasing power and living standards. Businesse revenues decrease, causing a contraction as workers are laid off to compensate for the loss in profit. This is a recessionary cycle that decreases living standards for most people. This occured during the Great Depression and Great Recession.

A living wage is moral and logical.

Has anyone ever told you that worker ownership "isn't feasible" or that workers are "too stupid" to successfully run their own businesses? Some people hold these views, and they're wrong. Worker ownership has been studied for decades, and the results are in. Don't underestimate worker ownership. 👷‍♀️🏢

UK employee-owned businesses:
Improved financial wellbeing:
EOBS pay higher basic wages and share profits. In 2020 Employee Ownership Trust payments put £2,729 in the pocket of each employee.
Driving profit growth:
Most EOBS see profits grow after becoming employee owned. They are 25%+ more likely to have seen profits grow over the last five years.
A more prosperous economy:
EO drives up economic productivity. EOBS are found to be 8%-12% more productive per employee than other businesses.
Greater employee wellbeing:
Because of higher investment in wellbeing and changing business practices, most (73%) EOBS report increased employee satisfaction after becoming employee owned.
Employee engagement and commercial success:
Increased engagement and effort by employee owners drives increased performance by 20%, and an increase in business revenue of up to 43%.
Significant job-creation:
The EO sector contributes around 541,300 jobs to the economy. EOBS are 50% more likely to expand their workforces than other businesses.
More investment in training and skills:
EOBS spend an average of £38,000 (12%) more on training per company compared with non-EOBS.
More investment to improve products & services:
EOBS are 50% more likely to invest in Research & Development than non-EOBS.
Resilience & sustainability:
51,000 small and medium businesses risk closure due to ownership changes in the next decade. EO is a proven succession route that can retain these businesses.

Worker Co-op Impact by the Numbers: People of color make up 56.8% of worker-owners, and people identifying as female make up 62.5% of the workforce at worker co-ops. Worker-owned co-ops are two-thirds more likely to succeed than the average U.S. company. Worker-owned co-ops enjoy 5% higher productivity levels than traditional businesses. Worker co-ops employ happier workers with a higher level of job satisfaction than traditional companies. Worker co-ops maintain a 2:1 pay ratio compares to the average ceo-to-worker pay ratio of 303:1. Annual employee turnover for worker co-ops is 15% compared with industry norms of 40-60%.

ESOP resilience through the pandemic:
More likely to retain staff:
Majority ESOP-owned companies were 3 to 4 times more likely to retain staff compared to other businesses during the pandemic.
Lower job loss:
Looking at all plan filings during the pandemic controlling for size, industry, and region, being an ESOP is associated with retaining or adding an additional 6 employees (active participants).
More likely to grow:
In a study of the food industry, ESOPs were 18% more likely to report an increase in revenue during the pandemic compared to a closely matched group of non-ESOPs. The median retirement account balance among all working individuals in the US is $0.00.
ESOPs paid out over $137 billion dollars
to participants in 2019. Total contributions to ESOP accounts were over $89 billion in 2019, an average of $6,420 in contributions per participant. The average ESOP account balance is more than double the average 401(k) account balance at a closely matched non-ESOP company offering only a 401(k) plan. (As well, a large majority of ESOP companies offer a 401(k) plan alongside the ESOP.) A survey of S corporation ESOPs found the same pattern for employees making under $25,000 a year, with ESOP employees holding an average of
$55,526 in retirement savings compared to $22,447, the retirement savings of similar workers nationally.

Unions help reduce disparities and strengthen our democracy. Unionization has an inverse relationship with income inequality: the higher the unionization rate, the lower the income inequality. As union membership declines, income inequality increases. Union membership and share of income going to the top 10%, 1917-2019.

As union membership increased to around 30% in the mid-20th century, the share of income going to the top 10% decreased significantly. As union membership decreased post the 1960s, the share of income going to the top 10% inversely increased.

States with high union density have progressive policies that benefit all workers.

New York has a 2020 union coverage of 23.6% and has a $15 minimun wage, paid sick leave, and paid family leave. The trend continues for other high union density states such as Rhode Island, Washington, Connecticut, and New Jersey, which also have some or most of these policies. Michigan and Vermont are the only states on the list, ranked 8th and 10th by union coverage respectively, with only one of these policies (paid sick leave). Oregon, ranked 7th, is the only state on the list with fair workweek laws.

Voter turnout in elections is higher in states with greater levels of union representation. Average voter turnout in top and bottom 10 states by average union density, 1989-2020.

The top 10 states by union representation had a 45.9% midterm election turnout, while the bottom 10 states by union representation had a 40.7% midterm election turnout.

The top 10 states by union representation had a 61.7% general election turnout, while the bottom 10 states by union representation had a 57.7% general election turnout.

The table displays the percentage of firms in the study that achieve criteria such as innovation in product, process, organizational, and marketing, as well as achieving criteria that are environmentally beneficial, such as less CO2 emissions, trash recycling, and the replacement of polluting raw materials. The firms with profit sharing are more likely to match these criteria, suggesting that they are more likely to benefit the environment.
