something is only a “culture war issue” to you if you think it’s not about you; otherwise it’s just “politics” or (maybe) “life”

An asteroid killed the dinosaurs because they didn’t have a space agency – so ESA’s Hera asteroid mission has a dino mascot (also aboard the spacecraft in real life!). But our dino needs a name – that’s where you come in! www.esa.int/Space_Safety...

I have colleagues who use LLMs to find papers to study and cite and (while there are studies showing that those searches can build biases in) I’m sure they can often find work otherwise overlooked. But their architecture also inherently includes remixing without attribution. We should be vigilant.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*

A rare snowy day for the ELT ❄️ Two weeks ago northern Chile was affected by severe weather. It caused damage to several cities and brought snow to our observatories, leaving stunning imagery like this drone video of our Extremely Large Telescope. 🔭 1/2

p.s. "Radical gender ideology" lines up pretty well with science as in biological sex is determined by many factors and sex/gender is not two airtight boxes from which no one can or should stray. The pretense that we have gender ideology and they don't is also cracked.

Trump’s “Gender Ideology” Attacks Are Following a Global Movement
In Europe and Latin America, the concept has been used to demand and justify far-reaching attacks on women’s rights and LGBTQ rights.

Admirable clarity @science.org
The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story

I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test" when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter it's diagnostic
