"You can tell the sun in his jealous sky / When we walked in fields of gold." For #FrescoFriday, the House of #Livia on the #Palatine. Painted c. 30 BCE during the ascendancy of #Augustus, this Second Style wall depicts his Golden Age of perpetual abundance. #AncientBluesky 🏺
FRESCO WITH GARLANDS AND COLUMNS, HOUSE OF LIVIA, C. 30 BCE. PALATINE HILL

A section of ancient Roman fresco displaying the Second Style of wall painting. Though Livia only inhabited this house after Augustus's death in 14 CE, it was decorated circa 30 BCE, contemporary with the nearby House of Augustus. The flat wall is painted to create a three-dimensional illusion, with fluted columns framing a central panel. Suspended between them is a heavy garland of pine foliage, leaves, and round fruits. Crucially, these plants are shown fruiting and flowering simultaneously, defying the seasons. This impossible ripening is a visual manifesto of the Augustan Aurea Ætas or Golden Age of perpetual abundance. The artist painted subtle cast shadows behind the ribbon-tied garland to enhance the depth. Above is a horizontal yellow frieze featuring faintly-sketched, monochrome sacro-idyllic landscapes showing rural shrines.

In the paranoid imperial court of the C4 CE, a lavish #sarcophagus was more than personal piety. For officials standing within the immediate, potentially lethal gaze of the emperor, it was a political shield and an insurance policy written in marble. #SarcophagusSaturday #AncientBluesky 🏺 🧵
SARCOPHAGUS OF JUNIUS BASSUS, 359 CE. TREASURY OF SAINT PETER'S BASILICA, VATICAN CITY

A high-relief marble sarcophagus is divided into ten distinct niches across two tiers, separated by elegant columns decorated with vintage harvesting motifs and straight fluting. The figures perform key biblical narratives, establishing a dense, heavily structured visual manifesto that completely dominates the front facade of the tomb. This luxurious monument demonstrates how Bassus, the urban prefect, deployed a highly visible, state-vetted Christian vocabulary to signal absolute submission to the regime. By setting this monument into the apse of Old St Peter's, an imperial foundation, he transformed the sarcophagus into a permanent political shield designed to preserve their hereditary wealth during a period of intense courtly paranoia.

Anthony Kaldellis shows that ethnography did not vanish in Byzantium. It was embedded in histories, manuals, and theology. These texts described “others” less as neutral observation and more as a way to define Roman identity and imperial self-understanding. #Historiography #AncientBluesky 🏺

1/2 Can myths become history? M. David Litwa argues that the evangelists deliberately framed the story of Jesus using the literary conventions of Greco-Roman historiography, rulers, places, eyewitnesses, and other devices that ancient readers associated with historical writing.
