Such good memories of Bristol Energy (2015-22). It cost Bristol ratepayers £39.3 million but strangely enough it appears that most of its customers were outside the city. All this at a time when Bristol Council were trying to force through Library closures.

Come fly with me. For #FrescoFriday, this mid-C1 CE Pompeian #fresco captures the myth's suspense. The artist drops a still-upright Icarus into a serene coastal landscape, shocking the boatmen below while languid figures on the cliff simply look on. #AncientBluesky 🏺
FRESCO OF THE FALL OF ICARUS, PLASTER AND PIGMENT, FROM POMPEII, 50-75 CE. BRITISH MUSEUM

This mid-C1 CE painted wall panel from Pompeii depicts the myth of Icarus against a serene Roman coastal landscape. A red border frames the scene, where the winged figure of Icarus remains upright and airborne, capturing the suspenseful moment before his catastrophic plunge. The background features a fortified coastal city on a rocky hill, complete with an amphitheatre. This mythological event is deliberately juxtaposed with an idyllic seaside setting, including a maritime villa on the left shore. In the foreground, witnesses react to the impossible sight. Two languid figures lounge on the right-hand rocky cliffs, while two figures in a small wooden boat in the centre raise their arms in sheer astonishment at the boy above them. Icarus is here caught eternally at the moment of his joyous escape into the sky. Unlike him, the viewer knows the flying boy is doomed.

For #FrescoFriday, let us go underground to trace the birth of the grotesque. Renaissance artists famously crawled through the dirt to explore the ruins of Nero's Domus Aurea by torchlight. They found ceilings covered in delicate, painted candelabra. #AncientBluesky 🏺 🧵
FABULLUS. DETAIL, ROOM OF ACHILLES AT SCYROS, 64-68 CE. DOMUS AUREA

The scalloped semi-dome of a room in Nero's buried palace, constructed from rough exposed brick and mortar at the edges. The intact plaster of the dome features delicate painted decorations radiating outwards. These linear bands look like spindly candelabra, interspersed with small mythological figures and floral motifs, offering a glimpse into opulent, lightweight architectural fantasies. Given the importance of this room, the work was likely executed by the master painter Fabullus himself rather than left to his pupils. This space serves as the starting point for our guide Bernardino Betti, known as "Il Pinturicchio" or the "rich painter" for his love of using gold in his work. He is widely considered to be the first painter of grotesques, a style directly copied from these subterranean "grotte" or caves. But where exactly did he find his inspiration?
